The group Mayors against Illegal Guns, sent Erica Lafferty, the daughter of the school principal slain in the Newtown massacre last year to address Kelly Ayotte at an event. Lafferty asked Ayotte “why the burden of my mother being gunned down in the halls of her elementary school isn’t as important” as inconveniencing gun owners. Lafferty then followed up with TV interviews to be sure to get the gun control message out of Washington and into our homes.
A similar tactic was used by the husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was wounded in a shooting in Arizona in 2011, as he challenged the NRA. He wrote in an opinion piece that “What most members of the NRA want from the organization and what the leadership is actually doing are not the same.” He wrote it for a Houston newspaper as thousands of NRA members were gathered in the city for their annual convention.
Polls show that most Americans are favoring some sort of new gun restrictions, the feeling is that these pressure tactics appear to be working. A Senate source indicates that Manchin has been getting feedback that they need to figure out new verbiage to help the Senators save face if they vote for
