Mandala Autobiography Project
How do symbols come together to communicate the “essence” of who you are?
Over the next few weeks, we will looking at different aspects of an autobiography. At the end of the unit, you will be creating a mandala and an autobiographical essay that reveals some aspect of your life.
Quick Writes: You will be given a series of quick writes that will help you in your essay. These will be turned in as part of your grade for the Mandala Project. Also included in this will be assignments relating to autobiographical readings that we will be discussing in class. (50 points)
Mandala: Using activities in class, you will create a circular mandala that contains five symbols that are representations of who you are, what you stand for, an experience that has shaped you, or demonstrates the “essence” of who you are. The mandala should be vivid in color, neat, and utilize the space of the circle. It should be as artistic as possible. This is not meant to be a collage of computer generated images, which you can use, but incorporate those images into a design that is unique. (50 points)
Essay: Using the quick writes and your mandala as the basis for your writing, you will create an autobiographical essay that reveals a significant aspect of your life. There are many good approaches to telling your story. Experiment with storytelling. Use these approaches as a starting point for writing your essay. Your essay should help the reader understand how the symbols in your mandala demonstrate your uniqueness and the “essence” of who you are.
