The Pilot
Manfred von Richthofen, known as “The Red Baron,” was a renowned fighter pilot in the German Imperial Army Air Service during the Great War. Born on May 2, 1892, in Breslau, German Empire (now Wroclaw, Poland), he received his education at the Wahlstatt Cadet School in Berlin, and later at the Senior Cadet Academy at Lichterfelde. Following in his father’s footsteps, Manfred went on to the Berlin War Academy, and joined an Uhlan Cavalry Unit in the army. At the start of the First World War, Richthofen served as a reconnaissance officer, but as the stalemate and trench warfare rendered cavalry useless, his regiment was used for non-combat service, such as being dispatch runners.
