Mango Waste Case Study
Introduction
Mango, Mangifera indica belong to the family Anacardiaceae. It is one of the choicest fruit crops of tropical and sub-tropical regions. Mango is a very popular fruit, it is often referred to as ‘king of fruits’ in the tropical world (Singh et al. 2002), but after consumed or used by the mango processing industry, mango seeds are generally only disposed of as waste (Puravankara et al. 2000; Kittiphoom 2012). On the other hand, enough scientific information is available regarding the nutritional importance of mango waste. From environmental and food insecurity perspectives, it is extremely important to efficiently utilize of mango waste, for safer environment and feeding of ever increasing human population. The issue of food insecurity in Asia and Africa in the coming 35-50 years may lead to hunger and starvation (FAO 2006).
Mango seed account for 35%-55% of the fruit, depending on the variety (Bhalerao et al. 1989), and 75% of the stone (Ahmed et al. 2007). The kernel inside the seed represents from 45% to 75% of

MSKO was included in protein based diet at 10 and 20% concentrations, compared with a control group that was fed on groundnut oil. Feed efficiency-ratio, digestibility and growth performance of rats fed on MSKO were not significantly different from the control group. Toxicological studies evidenced no difference in reproductive performance, serum, liver, total cholesterol, total lipids, triglycerides and organ weight from the control. Histopathological evaluation of organs did not reveal any abnormality. These results suggested that MSKO no toxic effects (Rukmini & Vijayaraghavan 1984). Analysis of cholesterol content in MSKO showed that it is cholesterol free (Mostafa 2013). Previous, study in livestock feeds by Agunbiade & Olanlokun (2006) showed that MSK is not toxic and can be safely introduced as a supplement into livestock

Money is the root of evil. A Long Way Gone and The Bite of the Mango are both memoirs of the Sierra Leone Civil War. Although the book does not touch upon the causes of the civil war, through research diamonds were a main contributor and a cause of the war. Sierra Leone was embedded with diamonds and other luxurious stones, thus making it a gargantuan mining center. Diamonds caused tensions between the government and rebellious citizens, contributed to the emergence of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and supplied warfare to the RUF. Ibrahim Kamara states in a speech that “The root of the conflict is and remains diamonds, diamonds and diamonds”. The decade-long conflict affected numerous lives of innocent and vulnerable citizens. The magnitude of food waste is a pressing problem, which causes harm to the economy and the environment. In the United States, nearly 40% of food gets thrown away. This is primarily due to the ignorance of the consumers and the distributors with regards to food waste. Consumers should be mindful about the amount and kind of food they purchase while distributors should be careful not to overstock the shelves (Food Waste: The Facts, n.d.). Consumers should be more mindful about throwing away food just because it is older than the sell by date. The sell by date actually has no correlation to freshness; it just lets the grocer know when to take it off the self. Use by dates, on the other hand, are a better indicator of freshness.(Woodruff, 2013).…

The article “Food waste: Is America throwing away food too soon?” by Sean Rossman brought light to an epidemic we face in our country today, food waste. I couldn’t help but nod my head in agreement while reading, as everything the author discussed was accurate. This got me thinking, and I came to the realization that my family is a part of the problem and were oblivious to it. We throw away food all the time and don’t see anything wrong with it. However, my point of view on the situation changed, and I learned to show more gratitude toward food. As someone who is living in poverty and barely getting by, I am fortunate enough to never go without a meal. And hearing that this food being thrown away could feed less fortunate people was a wakeup…

In the Philippines, anthracnose and stem-end rot are considered the most serious and destructive diseases of mango. Anthracnose infects almost all mango parts including floral panicles, twigs, leaves, and fruits of mature and immature trees. Next to anthracnose, stem-end rot is considered a major problem limiting the storage and shelf life of mango fruits. This disease occurs only on ripe fruits where rotting usually begins at the stem end. In May 2002–May 2004, Opina (UPLB) studied on integrated disease management alternative to control anthracnose and stem-end rot of ‘Carabao’ mango and reduce the incidence and severity of these important diseases. Specifically, the research project aimed to identify fungicides that can provide optimum protection to mango fruits with optimized application frequency.…

*B.Sc. –II year (2008-2011), Department of Botany, Patna Women's College, Patna University **Lecturer (Guest faculty), Department of Botany, Patna Women's College, Patna University Tomatoes are most widely used vegetable in daily life. Fresh ripe fruits of tomatoes are refreshing appetizing and are consumed raw in salads or after cooking. Unripe fruits are cooked and eaten. Tomatoes are consumed also in the form of juice, paste, ketchup, sauce, soup and powder. According to latest studies in nutritional chemistry red tomatoes raw nutritional value per 100 gm (3.5 oz) contains 20 kcal, carbohydrate - 4 gm, sugar – 2.6 gm, dietary fibre – 1 gm, fat – 0.2 gm, protein – 1 gm, water – 95 gm, vitamin C – 13 gm. It also contains minerals like calcium – 48 gm, phosphorous 20 –gm, iron – 0.4 gm, small amount of vitamin B complex. The tomato is essentially an alkaline vegetable, its acid taste is due to malic acid which is about 0.5% it also contains 0.52& to 1.81 citric acid and only a trace of oxalic acid is present. These acids in tomatoes, in combination with sodium and potassium either form sodium or potassium acid malate, citrate or oxalate. Their end products when oxidized in the body are carbon dioxide, water and the carbonates of potassium and sodium. The latter has alkaline reaction. Tomatoes thus leave an alkaline ash in the process of oxidized by the body. This increases the alkalinity of the blood and decreases the urine and neutralizes the acid compounds of the body such as phosphates, urea and ammonia. It is, therefore, highly beneficial in the treatment of acidosis and other diseases associated with too much acid in the system. The presence of oxalate ions and oxalic acid content in tomatoes is also a cause of kidney stones. Several researches have proven that the…
