Written by Joanna Hoang http://www.greeniacs.com/GreeniacsGuides/Energy/Manual-Washing-Machine.html Manual Washing Machine
Washing machines can cost hundreds and even thousands of dollars a year to run depending on your washing machine type, whether or not you use hot, warm, or cold water, your energy company’s prices, water company’s prices, and the number of loads you run per week! Most significantly, roughly ninety percent of the energy used by washing machines just goes towards heating water!1

So, how about a bike pedal-powered washing machine? Currently, there are many different designs and ideas for pedal powered washing machines. The goals differ, but they include reducing energy and water consumption and costs, and increasing accessibility for people who cannot afford and/or do not have the energy capacity to own conventionally powered washing machines. By now you are probably wondering how you can manage to get your hands on a pedal powered washing machine... Unfortunately, at this time there are no pedal powered washing machines available for mass production and thus for purchase by consumers. However, if you are handy with tools you can build your own!

BENEFITS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: Medium to High. Using a pedal powered washing machine will help you use significantly less energy and save water.

COSTS: Low - Medium

Using the friction caused from rubbing clothing against rocks, and rinsing the clothes in a stream in order to clean them, no doubt became a tedious task in a short time. However, the technology did not exist to improve on this method. That is, not until the year of 1782, when the first washing machine was designed by a man named H. Sidgier from Great Britain. This machine consisted of a cage with wooden rods and a handle that was used for turning.…

Developing new products and managing them through the first several stages of the product life cycle can be a difficult and risky task. Inventor James Dyson learned how to manage an effective product life cycle through trial and error. His experiences have led him to believe that the time has come for an “effective and environmentally friendly” hand dryer for private and public restrooms. Though this seems a far cry from vacuums, Dyson’s entrepreneurial skills have helped him to launch his new venture.…

    Process Essay

Laundry is a daily chore that must be done. I do not know of anyone who enjoys the daily ritual of cleaning clothes but with a few easy steps it does not have to be such a hassle. There is also some pre-planning steps you can take that will save you time and frustration. The first and most important step in the laundry process is to be prepared. Make sure you have all the supplies you need to get the job done before you get started. You will need laundry detergent. You can buy powder or liquid detergent, but I prefer liquid because powder detergent does not always dissolve completely and you can substitute liquid detergent for stain remover in a pinch. You will also need a stain remover, such as Shout, and bleach. Bleach now comes in a color safe version so you can use it on all your clothes, not just whites. I also recommend using a liquid fabric softener in the wash but you will need sheets for the dryer as well. Most washing machines have a place to put it or you can buy a ball that goes in the washer and releases the fabric softener at the right time. Also, you will need a basket for your dirty clothes to go in.. I keep several so I can sort them as they get dirty instead of digging through one basket to get a load. Once you have all your supplies you are ready to start. Depending on what you are washing you will need to adjust the setting on your washer. For example towels can be washed on heavy duty but finer linens such as silks need a more delicate setting. Start the washer and add the detergent and any bleach as the water begins to fill. If you do not already have your laundry separated in baskets, you will need to go through everything to get a load ready. Like colors and fabrics…

In the developing world, washing laundry is a difficult, time-consuming task that falls solely on women. Mothers and daughters typically spend 8 hours each week scrubbing each piece of their family's clothing and wringing out the harsh washing solution by hand. Electrical washing machine exists in this developing world but they are too expensive that others cannot afford. It is known to be the fastest way of washing clothes which requires less effort. In some instance, electricity is expensive and unavailable as it does not exist in some rural localities. This investigatory project entitled “Pedal Washchine” is designed to develop an improvised washing machine to lessen the physical burden of women doing laundry by hands. It will lessen the time of washing clothes, conserves energy and is environmental friendly. It is also made out of locally available and dumped materials. This eco-friendly laundry machine is cheaper than the commercial one. This will contribute a lot in electrical energy conservation. Yes, it is made of dumped materials but because of creativity and resourcefulness, we had come up with this useful machine. This machine is environmental friendly because it doesn't require electricity. It can be a double purpose machine which can be a laundry machine and at the same time, exercise equipment while washing clothes. Through this project, the husband can exercise using the pedal of the machine while his wife does the laundry. Kids can also help their mother doing the laundry while riding on it. The kids will surely enjoy it because we have made it just like the usual bike so it is very easy to use. Powered washing machines normally exist but this machine is quite unusual. Running water and electricity are expensive. Some cannot afford to buy washing machines or pay high bills. Our invention is the Pedal Washchine, a low cost, pedal-powered washing machine that is designed with readily available parts. It is easy to…
