Many of Today’s Drivers Have Dangerous Driving Habits.
Many of today’s drivers have dangerous driving habits.
Everyone will eventually cross paths with a reckless driver. Dangerous driving habits can be seen on highways, on residential streets, and in parking lots. You do not have to travel far to see people driving with risky driving techniques. Many of us survive these situations, but some do not. Dangerous drivers kill people and destroy property everyday. Younger drivers can be dangerous drivers simply because they lack experience driving in various environments, such as driving at night, or driving on interstate highways. But there are drivers from all age groups that have dangerous driving habits. Even older drivers are sometimes dangerous because their senses and reflexes are not as good as they were. While driving in town or on the highway, it is rare not to see someone driving while talking on your cell phone. Driving while talking on a cell phone not only takes your concentration away from the road, it also takes your eyes away from the road. Technology has added to dangerous driving habits. Cell phones especially. They’re now more popular than ever. I’m pretty sure half of the wrecks that occur by today’s young people are because of cell phones. Everyone wants to talk and text while driving, not thinking that it could be you or another persons’ cause of death. Because of this many people have started to use a hands-free device. Hands-free devices will allow you to keep both hands on the wheel. However, it does not change the distractions involved with being on the phone while driving. And it doesn’t help at all with text messaging. So to be honest the best way to prevent this situation is to not use the phone while driving at all.
One of the most common dangerous driving habits is eating while driving. Many drivers leave the drive thru of their favorite restaurant and immediately pull onto a road while trying to eat and drink the food they just purchased. That bad habit can distract a driver from paying attention to other drivers on the road and being aware of road conditions.
Another dangerous driving habit is putting on makeup while driving. You may not see it being done a lot, but it happens. I’m a perfect example because if I’m running late to somewhere important I tend to put on makeup. The lack of concentration while driving a vehicle severely reduces our reaction speeds. Facts show that applying make-up while driving is thought to be a leading cause of accidents, and is completely irresponsible.
Last but not least drinking and driving is a horrible dangerous driving habit. Billions of people have lost their lives and took others while driving under the influence of alcohol. If you’re going to have drinks and you know you are driving it is always good to have a friend with you that can drive for you. Or you could always choose to do the responsible thing and call someone to pick you up.

First of all, distraction is one of the major causes leading to accidents. From the moment of picking up the phone, to read a text, to the moment it is being put back down, there is a loss of sight from the road which could either result in a life threatening accident, or a lucky escape from a life threatening accident. A Nationwide survey has shown that 45 percent of Americans said they've either been hit or nearly hit by a driver on a cell phone (Saletan 2). It is a split second of loss of focus on the road that could cost someone their life. Texting while driving makes people lose vision from the road and makes them forget what is going on around them, and that is what makes it so dangerous. One study showed that “the more tasks you dump on drivers—listening, evaluating, answering questions—the worse they perform. They drift off course, miss cues, overlook hazards, and react slowly. It's the picture of a mind being sucked from one world into another”(Saletan 2). All of these add up to a series of events which can occur to a driver while texting behind the wheel who did not even notice what happened. That is when they suddenly look up and try to react in time while it is actually already too late to react, and they end up in an accident. People do not see the real danger of it until either they themselves experience a life threatening accident while texting and…

Traffic safety experts classify distractions into three main types manual, visual and , cognitive. Manual are those who move their hands freely from the task of controlling the vehicle. Visual, simply when you focus your eyes away from the road and last but not least cognitive, when you let your mind wander away from the task of driving. Even Hands-free or voice-activated text message and email services that are present on your phone or in your car are some of the most major distractions for drivers nowadays. Although you may not be directly holding onto the phone and controlling it, you have to press the buttons in your car or on your Bluetooth headset, speak the proper commands to the device, and then speak the full content of your message or email. This takes your mind off the more important task of focusing on the road and distracts you by causing you to think about something else. When operating a cell phone in any kind of way while you are driving you are directly performing each of these. Texting creates a major distraction while you are driving. In fact, the average amount of time that you may be distracted from the road while texting is about 5 seconds. In a vehicle traveling approximately 55 miles per hour, you will be essentially driving the length of a football field without looking where you are going. sending text messages is the most dangerous. A person…

Using a cell phone while driving can cause the driver to take their eye off the road and cause them to think about what’s going on with their cell phone. When a phone call comes through on the driver’s cell phone, this distracts them from paying attention to the road. This is a major cause of accidents and deaths on the road. This also is putting drivers life in danger. While drivers may think they can handle talking on the phone they tend to miss visual and audio clues to avoid crashes. For example, there could be a crash on the highway. Drivers pick up their cell phone to call spouse or a friend to inform them of the trouble car crash. In the split second you looked down to dial the number you didn’t see the sign that said “right lane closed.” You then look up and realize that you are now in the right lane were the accident occurred. Before you could slow down or even stop you run into the back of a car that was just in an accident. Now because you picked up your cell phone instead of consternating on the road you put yourself in a situation you did not have to be in. This is just a few reasons why concentration on the road is so critical to prevent accidents.…

The Government has made attempts to try to prevent these distractions from happening. Hands-free was created to be a safer alternative to holding a phone while driving. While in theory this was a safer route, but over 30 studies show that in reality hands-free is no safer than holding the phone itself. Just because your hands are remaining on the wheel does not mean your mind is focus on driving (Mohn, 2014). Since the use for hands-free really is not safer or because most people choose not to use it. We should just overall ban the use of cell phones to all drivers, because as of March, 2016, there were no states that have bans on all cell phone use of all drivers, but 37 states and D.C. have ban all cell phone use for novice or teen drivers (Teigen,…
