“The new girl” is a short story about two good friends, who enjoy playing together and live on the same street. The story teller is 8 years old and her best friend Alison is 10 (Unfortunately we do not get to know the story tellers name). The storyteller and Alison are playing on their bikes during the hot summer when suddenly the storyteller spots a new girl. The storyteller then smiles to the new girl until Alison spots her. Alison then immediately begins cursing at her and calling her a nigga, but the new girl keeps smiling until Alison says “I said get out of here, nigger, or I'll beat you up. The new girl then says "I thought maybe we could play. My name is”, but she never gets to finish her sentence because Alison instaly responds aggresively with: ”I dont play with niggers”. The new girl then runs to her house, and Alison and the storyteller then sees her mother put her head to the window to look out on the street. The storyteller and Alison keeps playing, but the storyteller have gotten a tight knot inside her stomach. From time to time the storyteller would then see the new girl playing in her yard, but she never spoke to her. Over the summer the storytellers knot in her stomach grew bigger and thicker. After 20 years the knot is still there, and the storyteller hopes that the girl have forgotten about her and Alison.
The story takes place in a middle class neighbour ”Prospect Street was in a white, lower-middle-class neighborhood”. During the summer ”It was a hot, bright day. Everything was burning - the roofs, the shrubs, the asphalt, our bike seats, our skin, our hair”.
