Marcus Aurelius Quotes
The quote I chose is, “The best revenge is not to become like the one who wronged you.” Marcus Aurelius came up with this quote. I think this quote means that if you do something back to a person that has wronged you, you’re just stooping down to their level and giving them satisfaction. But, if you don’t get revenge on them and don’t stoop to their level, it’ll be revenge within itself because it shows them that you’re the bigger person. A real word example would be, the United States and terrorists. If the United States got revenge and stooped to the terrorists level, we would most likely be in a war or in bad shape as a country. I also feel like this quote means to become a better person after someone has wronged you. Don’t become like someone

Success is the best revenge. Perhaps one of the best examples of this famous saying in history is Dante Alighieri. A prominent politician in 13th century Florence, Alighieri was exiled by Pope Boniface VII and the Black Guelph political party (Toynbee 98). Naturally, when Alighieri was exiled from his home country, he carried more than a few grudges and perceived slights against him. Luckily for history, Alighieri was not the kind of man to simply send a rude letter in the mail to Pope Boniface. He was the kind of man to write a 14,000 line epic poem would be so groundbreaking, controversial, and well written that it would transcend the barriers of language and time too get analyzed by college students 700 years later.…

A Stoic is a person who is seemingly indifferent to or unaffected by joy, grief, pleasure, or pain. One who is not touched by the outside world seem to live inside themselves always thinking that today might be the last. Stoics detach themselves from things of this worlds including objects, people, and to a certain extent their own lives. In Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations and Epictetus’ Discourses they both explain how to properly be a stoic, learning to deny their feelings, respect themselves and nature, and detach themselves from the useless things of this world.…

In the text Romulus my father, written by Raimond Gaita, the main character of Romulus's life is marked by suffering. Gaita who is the son of Romulus, includes plenty personal and descriptive accounts of his father Romulus. Many of these accounts involve examples of how Romulus life was marked by suffering. Such suffering occurred throughout Romulus life by having to move away from his homeland to Australia, being denied his love for education, having to work his hands to the bone in order to scrape by and the overall conditions that Romulus lived by to constantly support others. As a tragic hero Brutus possesses a flaw of naivety. Brutus is too trusting in others, such as the conspirators. The conspirators believed that Caesar was too ambitious and that they should kill him for the good of Rome, themselves and for their own personal benefit. Brutus trusted that they were conspiring to kill him for the sake of Rome. (Quote). He was also naïve by letting Antony speak at Caesar’s funeral. Brutus believed that Antony would praise Caesar at his funeral and follow the rules that he was given. Brutus trusted him and by letting him speak Antony turned all the Romans against him. Revenge, the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for their wrongdoings against another, is characterized as a corruption of the mind of the affected individual. Throughout the history of literature, countless authors have incorporated the theme of revenge into their works. For example, in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter, Roger Chillingworth seeks revenge on Minister Dimmesdale because of his crime committed with Hester. Similarly, in William Shakespeare’s, Othello, Iago devises an evil plan to avenge Othello of his rumored sin.…

Revenge is a selfish quality that only benefits you, and helps nobody else. The predominant emotions that occur when revenge is achieved include: hurt, anger, spite, guilt and many more to follow; the emotions that make revenge different from justice are all selfish emotions that again, only benefit (or harm) you. For example “Revenge is mostly about “acting out” (typically through violence) markedly negative emotions.” “Justice...isn’t really about “getting even” or experiencing a spiteful joy in retaliation. Instead, it’s about righting a wrong…”. Seltzer tells us in his Don’t Confuse Revenge With Justice: Five Key Differences article, that “revenge has a certain selfish quality to it, “cool” justice is selfless in that it relies on non-self-interested, established law.” This snippet is describing that revenge is selfish and only done for the good of one, whereas justice is done for the good of many. Revenge is also an act of vindictiveness that is claimed to happen in cycles. The cycles can occur between a span of 24 hours to 24 years, because it doesn't happen just once. “Those who wish to punish the current and future generations for the inequities of a generation long gone, and who equate justice with revenge, are the most dangerous people in the world.” --Dean…
