Mark Zusak chose to include 13 Harrison Avenue at this point in the novel to show a softer, empathetic more like likeable side of Ed, establish one of the main messages in this book and lastly to break up the intensity and tension of the plot the Edgar st scene generates. I chose to write about this episode because I believe it is the most crucial of the 3 in the establishment of a very important message in the novel, the development of the reader’s idea of Ed as a character and breaking up intensity and tension.

Without breaking up the intensity, the plot would become unbalanced with high levels of tension and intensity leading to the possibility of readers putting the novel down half way through the story.
