Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher, one of the best recognized women in the British history, was a politician, the firstts female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the lLeader of the Conservative Party. Her political decisions, which often evocated a wave of criticism but also acceptance as well, had influence on many lifes of British citizens and also changed the face of English politics cy once and for all. Beacuse of her rigidity and her assertive leadership that was so characteristic for the style of her goverence a Soviet journalist called her „Iron Lady“ which became a nomen omen well-known all around the world.

Thather Margaret Hilda Robertson was born in England in 1925 as Margaret Hilda Robertson.as a daughter of Her father Alfred Roberts was a tradesman very active tradesman in local politic affairs which mightayhave served as an inspiration for her future proffessional life. After finishig high school she went to study chemistry on Oxford were she held a rank of president of the Conservative Association. Later on after finishing her degree in 1947 she worked in Colchester and Daltford as a reasearch chemist before becoming a barrister..

Her political career started in 1959 when she was elected member of parliament for Finschley in North London. Being already marrried to Denis Thatcher, she was appointed secretary for education. Defeating Edward Heath in the Concervative Party leadreship election, Thatcher became leader of the opposition and suprisingly the first woman to lead a major political party in the United Kingdom. After the Conservatives won the 1979 general election, she became prime minister. Her main goal was to privatise the state-owned industries, she succeded to reduce social expeditures and lower taxes. Unfortunatelly as a consequence there was a dramatic increase in unemployment.

Thatcher served all together three terms in office. The second term started after the victory in the Falklands War and the third term after the 1987 election. She actively and closely cooperated with Ronald Regan sharing their commom distrust of communism and appriciated the reforms in the Soviet Union carried out by Mikhail Gorbachev. But her controvercial policies brought about fractions within the Consercative Party, especially the introduction of poll tax and her unwillingness for closer cooperation with Europe. She resigned in 1990 and was replaced by John Major. In 1992 she recieved a tittle of Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven and she was travelling and giving lectures for the next ten years around the world. Setting up a foundation, she supported political development even in Eastern Europe. She died of a stroke in 2013.
