There are two different theories that everyone says about how the moon was formed; the first theory is that scientists believe that the formation of the moon may have started when Earth was hit by …show more content…
Just by looking up at the night sky you can see the moon has “darker and lighter patches” all over the surface (Duncan 89). Many generations used to think the dark spots were oceans. Those dark spots are called “maria” (Duncan 89). These spots are smooth, made of basalt from lava (Duncan 89). Billions of years ago when the meteor hit the moon, it “exposed molten rock beneath the crust”. Then lava would have flowed out, making the craters we see today (Duncan 89). Interesting fact: one of the most famous of the Maria’s was the “SEAT OF TRANKQUILLITY,” the first moon landing was in this crater (Duncan 90). The Maria is surrounded by highland areas, these areas are marked by a “history of impacts by comets and meteors,” and the highland areas are covered in regolith,” which is a “very fine rock and dust coating” (Duncan 90). These fine dust particles are the outcome of “meteors breaking apart” when striking the surface of the
