In a competition between man and nature, nature more often claims victory. Pitted against tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, nothing man made is permanent. In an excerpt taken from Ann Petry's novel, The Street, the main character Lutie Johnson is antagonized by the tumultuous winds that inhabit the town, along with the frigid cold. Using such literary elements as dark imagery, descriptive selection to detail and appalling personification, Petry successfully captures Johnson's relationship with the urban setting.…

Everyone carries baggage In the novel ‘The Running Man’ by Michael Gerard Bauer, Tom Leyton, a great character in the process of changing carries a huge amount of baggage with him. Mrs. Mossop would always judge Tom Leyton and tell Joseph why she thinks Tom is a weird, silly boy. The dangers of stereotyping and putting ‘people in boxes’ is totally wrong as it gives the wrong information about a particular person which is not true. Mrs. Mossop is totally wrong when stereotyping as it gives a bad impression of herself as to judging others.…

As Gone with the Wind begins, Scarlett O’Hara is illustrated as an attractive wealthy spoiled brat. She is just that. She can get any man in her vicinity; well, she can get all but the one she has wanted for some time. She is rather haughty with the knowledge of her being able to do what she wants. She has a very provocative demeanor. The way she bats her eye lashes, fidgets with clothing, or what she wears.…

In order to fulfill his desire to find what he wants, he leaves his family without bothering about how they feel. His mother, Billie says, “Chris had instructed the post office to hold the letters until August 1, apparently so we wouldn’t know anything was up… it made us very, very worried” (22). McCandless is making a decision to disappear, into the wild, without considering the fact that his parents will be very worried about him. This is really illogical because all children should understand how their parents would feel if someday they left. Moreover, by leaving his current life which could have been filled with a bright future, McCandless shows that he just wants to run away from reality. He is such a coward because he does not want to deal with anything that he supposed to do; rather, he keeps giving reasons for his leaving by saying he wants experiences to understand his life. Actually, in order to make sense of his life, all he has to do is maintaining his current life. Also, the fact that he dies, proves that his journey is about exploring death rather than life. There is no point to go into the wild because it cost him his life. It is the biggest mistake that McCandless could ever…
