Maria Gaetena Agnesi was an Italian mathematician. She was the first woman ever to become a mathematics professor at a university and to write a mathematics handbook. Agnesi was born in 1718 in Milan, Italy to a wealthy family. Her father, a University of Bologna mathematics professor, being Pietro Agnesi and her mother, Anna Fortunata, who later died, causing Maria to take over the household. Her father remarried twice after the death of Maria's mother, Maria ended up being the eldest of the 21 children.
