Very little is known about Marie de France. It is known that her name is Marie and that she is from France although she spent a good portion of her life in England. Marie de France is attributed with three works Lais, the Fables, and St. Patrick’s Purgatory. The Lais are short narrative poems that are written in poetic verse. Marie wrote twelve Lais, short amorous tales. They are of noble lovers going through critical situations and incidents. The Lais created the style “Breton Lai.”…

Marie Antoinette was born in Vienna Austria on November 2, 1755. She was the 15th child of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa. In 1770 she married Louis-Auguste, the Dauphin of France. She was the Queen of France from 1774-1792. She was the mother of four children. At first, she was adored by her subjects. Eventually, though, she came to be disliked and even blamed for France’s financial crisis. The reasons for this dislike included her loyalties to Austria—France’s sworn enemy—and her extravagant lifestyle, profligate spending, big hair, and even bigger dresses. She was thus nicknamed Madame Deficit (French: Mrs. Debt). With the fall of the French government and the beginning of the French revolution, the royal family…

According to American mythologist, Joseph Campbell, “The greatest love was during the Medieval Ages, when noble hearts produced a romantic love that transcended lust” (Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers [2001]). The Lais of Marie de France are primarily concerned with this idea of love--specifically, courtly love--between a man and a woman. Courtly love, a union modeled after the feudal relationship between a knight and his liege lord, became a popular convention in the 12th century (“Backgrounds to Romance: ‘Courtly Love’”). Instead of proving loyalty to a lord, the man would have to prove his love to a woman. Marie de France, however, focuses not just on the idea of love, but also on the differing kinds of love that existed in medieval society. She recognizes love as a force that cannot be avoided and that can be executed correctly or incorrectly; not all love is equal.…

In “A Rose for Emily," by William Faulkner, the main character Emily Grierson is stuck living in the past within the isolated reality that she’s been forced into and that she herself created. Throughout the story, a major theme, (meaning what the story is about) is Emily’s resistance to change which leads to isolation. This Faulkner classic shows us how Emily became isolated because of her families, community and tradition.…

“A Rose for Emily” is a short story written by William Faulkner, and uses a lot of symbols to create different elements of the story. These symbols he uses are really what make this story interesting. A few of those symbols are her house, hair, and clothing, but I have chosen to talk about her house as a major symbol in this short story.…

As the narrator describes the rosebush, he offers a rose to the reader “to symbolize some sweet moral blossom that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow,” (Hawthorne 42). This foreshadows the story will be forlorn. The rose is an offer to comfort the reader at the end of a disheartening novel. The rosebush also symbolizes life and beauty surrounded by a dreary world of sorrow. Outside of the prison door, the lively rosebush grows next to many weeds. This shows a truly beautiful flower can arise from a complete barren region. The rosebush is mentioned again later in the novel. At the governor’s house, “Pearl, seeing the rosebushes, began to cry for a red rose, and would not be pacified,” (Hawthorne 95). This carries over from the symbolism in chapter one. Although Pearl acts like a child of the devil, filled with darkness and mystery, she can be sweet and delicate by holding a single rose.…
