I saw my son John sitting in the old rocking chair. He always sat in that chair just like me when he was thinking hard about something. He didn't pay much attention to the world around him. But then again who would, when the world we lived in was an old abandoned, dirty shantytown.

I decided to check on my marigolds. I put on my hat, grabbed my cane and went outside to ten to my marigolds. Those bright flowers beautiful they could bring out the beauty and anything.

I then heard some footsteps. I was still on the ground with my cane next to me when I saw the first rock fly towards my marigolds. It had startled John and it took him a few seconds to get up but I was up in flash throwing my cane around the bushes wildly.

People who do good things never gotta worry about people hurting them and the people who start all the trouble gotta look over they shoulder to make sure nobody trying to get them, but it doesn't. You can do all the good in the world and still have the same chance of getting hurt just as badly as somebody who purposely stirs up trouble. It ain't right but it's the way it is.

I planted my marigolds to help me with my issues. Some people cry, some get angry , I plant marigolds. John Burke don't understand why, he says the house isn't to nice looking, but I don't see the house. I see those beautiful marigolds that I put all my hard work into. I see something that finally shows the beauty out of all this filth and depression.

Those children don't understand. Part of me wants to believe it's because they haven't grown up yet, but if they knew how hard it was now, they'd probably be at the nearest store trying to get a job to help their parents instead of in my yard throwing stones at my flowers.

After she decided to go, I sat back down and started to think. I thought about how those children some more. It was getting pretty dark so I went back into my house. As I entered the door I heard that little boy Joey

For one does not have to be ignorant and poor to find that one’s life is barren as the dusty yards of one's town. And I too have planted marigolds” (Collier 116) What the author means in these few sentences is that when Lizabeth looks back on her childhood, she remembers the love of marigolds with pain because that is all she had growing up. The last sentence means that she still is fond of marigolds and holds on to those memories. This piece of evidence supports the theme because she developed this love for planting marigolds when she was a child and had…

The combination of diction and imagery used in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and “Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier weave a mood of downtrodden hopelessness. Throughout both passages, the authors describe a setting of desolate towns during difficult times, with townsfolk who have forgotten optimism. Such is utilized in To Kill a Mockingbird, as Maycomb is “a tired old town” where “grass gr[ows] on the sidewalks, [and] the courthouse sag[s]”; reading the description evokes an image of a town on the brink of bankruptcy, conveying the despair the inhabitants must feel (Lee). As the diction in the passage is usually equated with the elderly, Lee adds to the picture of a town on its last legs. In contrast, “Marigolds” focuses on the “arid, sterile…

I still remember that dreadful night as if it were yesterday, the day my pride, my joy, my everything, my marigolds were destroyed. That morning when I woke up I just knew it was going to be a bad day. I woke up and started doing the thing I've always done, I was taking care of my beautiful marigolds. I was out there for about two hours when a rock came flying at one of my marigolds and beheaded it, “Who out there?” I searched through the bushes trying to find the children who are always trying to get at me. “You better git” I yelled. I looked for a couple more seconds before I cautiously went back to my marigolds, but before I even knew it another rock beheaded another one of my marigolds. Those kids didn't understand my reasoning for planting…

Then one day I was walking along Steven's Creek thinking of nothing, and I saw it. I saw the tree with the lights in it. I stood on the grass with the lights in it. Gradually the lights went out, the colors unlit and disappeared, but I held onto the power, and I was ringing.…

It was a wonderful day in southern Spain and Sara and Kevin was out for a walk in the mouintains on their last vacation day. The view was extrodernery, olive plantings turning the otherwise dry land green and small white houses forming tiny villages, everything bathing in the strong Andalusian sunlight. As they walked upon an old path with a high cliff on the left-hand-side they passed a yellow sign with some text and the cliff painted in black, but since neither of them spoke Spanish they thought nothing of it. They walked on by and enjoyed each others companies very much, holding hands and talking about their holiday. Suddenly Sara stopped and claimed that she heard a noice of a rock falling down from the mountain beside them, but Kevin assured her that it was perfectly okay for them to continue their walk, since he was enjoying it so much. Just a second after he spoke those words a loud noise shoke the ground and before they even had time to react, massive rocks were flying down from the cliff just beside them.…
