Caring, central to nursing practice as it promotes patient health outcome spiritually, physically, and emotionally. Society sees nursing as a caring profession and it is also a reason why many of us chose this career path. Caring is one of the main reason why I decided to pursue nursing as my profession. Earlier this year in my intro to nursing class, I presented on the Watson’s Caring theory for our class project. It was also where I discovered that Kaiser Permanente whom shares the same belief model. Kaiser integrated the model of Caring Science, also known as the Watson’s theory into their nursing practice. Kaiser’s belief model is the ideal work environment that shares my core values about nursing. It is important to recognize future employer’s values because it is the framework that guides their practice in the clinical setting. Leading to the concept…

A terminal illness can have a devastating effect, not only on the patient, but the family as well. Caring for the patient does not just involve physically caring for the patient, but rather involves the holistic care, which is “all nursing practice that has healing the whole person as its goal” (American Holistic Nurses’ Association, 1998). The nurse becomes the therapeutic partner, which involves the care of the mind, body, and spirit, and is at the forefront of this care. It involves the patient and the care of the family during this difficult time.…

While providing this theory DudKiewicz encountered the overwhelming demand on healthcare workers leading to stress, which had a major impact on the a person’s behaviour. Due to this negative behaviour it resulted to decreasing client- nurse relationships. To prove her theory Dudkiewicz compared Jean Watson theory of caring to express the importance of caring to an individual; therefore showing that caring conveys a positive levels of satisfaction. It was determined that satisfaction levels did improve significantly following a caring-based intervention (Dudkiewicz, 2014, Bell,…

The role of caring as a registered nurse is an ever changing role. We as nurses must find the time to wear several different hats throughout the day even sometimes multiple hats at one time are needed to care for the patient at hand. Nursing theorist Jean Watson defines caring as a humanitarian science, and offers ten behaviors that demonstrate that. They are, in descending order: attentive listening, comfort, honesty, patience, responsibility, providing information so that the patient can make an informed decision, touch, sensitivity, respect, and calling the patient by name (Vance 2009). These are the multiple hats we as nurses must wear throughout the care of our patients. They are not complicated, but yet to the patient they make them feel like a real person rather than just another patient in a bed.…
