study migration patterns throughout the ocean between species. They document these migrations and help them analyze migrations between animals such as sharks and whales. Also, marine biologists study and document the history of animals and often this will lead to new discoveries and classifications. Marine biologists have a large variety of environment that they will work in. Most people think of marine biologists as people who are constantly in the ocean either diving or snorkeling, but that not always the matter. Often times, marine biologists will work in colleges or universities to teach others about marine biology rather than being hands on like most people think. Also, most marine biologists that don’t work as a professor will often spend most of their time in labs analyzing data. Many marine biologists have scientific journals in which they document their discoveries through analyzing data and will propose these journals to government agencies to get grants and funding for projects. Often times marine biologists will part take in weeklong projects, which require lots of funding for equipment and supplies. Marine biologists work in many different environments and partake in many different jobs and these aspects all determine a marine biologists salary (Marine Biologist). A marine biologist’s salary ranges from as little as $40,000 to $150,000 annually. A marine biologist’s salary is determined by multiple factors such as locations, education/training, and the branch of marine biology someone is pursuing. A marine biologist has many perks and benefits, one being travel. Marine biologists get to travel the world. They get to experience and see what most people would never see in their lifetime. Another perk of being a marine biologist is the technology/equipment. Marine biologists get to use very expensive and high tech equipment most people haven’t even heard of. Marine Biologists will get to experience hands on with thousands of dollars in tech/equipment. Also, the need for marine biologists is rising due to the increase in needs for medicine and new technology. Also, more jobs in the research aspect of Marine Biology are required due to the constant climate changing and increase in metals. Marine Biology related fields have tough competition due to the amount of people wanting to be marine biologists. To be able to be a Marine Biologist and compete for these jobs you need to have lots of proper education and training (Marine Biologists). To be a Marine Biologist you need at least a Bachelors degree in Marine Biology.
For most jobs you are required to have at least a Bachelors degree. Some jobs even require a Doctorates degree, but the majority of jobs either require a Masters or Bachelors degree. Normally a Masters or Doctorates degree is required for a high-end research position or a professor at a large college/university. Besides a college degree, Marine Biologists need to have many other aspects of education and training. Such things including being trained on how to safely use SCUBA and snorkeling equipment. A lot of a Marine Biologists time will be spent either managing or using SCUBA equipment. You need to know how to use and prepare SCUBA equipment. Knowing how to safely drive and operate a boat will help you in your career. Also, when becoming a Marine Biologist it’s good to have extra skills and experience. When beginning your career path in Marine Biology in high school you should take the proper classes and credits needed such as science, math, and even English classes. Another thing you should do while in high school is internships or even volunteer for aquariums, zoos, and other environments to help you in the future. Colleges and job employers will look at these things and often times it can decide between to applicants applying for a job. A Marine Biologist is a very popular career that many people aspire to have. Therefore, jobs right now in this pathway are rare. The ocean fascinates people around the world and the downside to that is the minimal amount of jobs positions open. That is why volunteering at aquariums and doing internships and having knowledge is important because it can make someone stand out more than others and that is crucial when applying for a job
(Thompson16). After researching Marine Biology I feel that my drive to pursue this career is greater than ever. A Marine Biologist gets to be in the ocean, help the environment, save animals, and even make new discoveries. Now knowing all this, I believe that Marine Biology would be the career for me because of my passion for animals and the ocean. Being able to combine all my passions and skills fascinates me and I think a Marine Biologist would suit me well. To conclude, a Marine Biologist is a very unique and fascinating career.
