Marine Biology Personal Statement
The journey to becoming a marine biologist is one that is embarked with hard work and keen determination. When I boarded on this journey as a student majoring in marine biology, I have always been fascinated by ocean exploration and how new scientific discoveries have revolutionized around it. I also live with great enthusiasm for conducting oceanic research, and I have always envisioned myself using scientific instruments and modern day technologies to conduct such research. Being a small island, Grenada allowed me to interact, explore, and learn about the natural environment and the Caribbean Sea. However, most of the knowledge I attained came from reading textbooks and attending lecture sessions. Consequently, my knowledge is simply based on the pinion of someone else. On the SEA Semester, I strongly believe I would be given the opportunity to conduct research parallel to the ones I have been taught during my lecturers. Therefore, I would gain knowledge through hands-on experience that will greater advance my understanding to make positive decisions towards the sustenance of the ocean and natural environment. After visiting the SSV Corwith Cramer docked outside the port of St. George’s in Grenada and getting a tour of the ship from the students on board, I knew definitely that I wanted to be a part of the this program. Even more appealing to me is the fact that the SEA Semester program gives students the opportunity to gain knowledge not only from a theoretical aspect but also through practical research. Therefore, SEA Semester provides the initiative for students to be more actively involved in learning and at the same time enjoy doing it.
