1. Introduction. . This Bay Of Bengal is a huge resource for Bangladesh in aspects of fisheries and hydrocarbons. The People’s Republic of Bangladesh is a sovereign South Asian country. It is bordered by India in all sides except small border with Myanmar and a long coastal line with the Bay Of Bengal. The Bay Of Bengal is the largest bay in the world, forms the North-Eastern part of Indian Ocean. BIMSTEC or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) supports free trade internationally around the Bay of Bengal between Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand
2. Fisheries. Bangladesh is having the 3rd largest aquatic biodiversity in Asia behind China & India. There are about 800 species of fresh, brackish & marine waters. It is having world’s largest flooded wetland (Bengal Delta) & three main river systems named Ganges, Brahmaputra & Meghna. Vast water resources offer the best possibilities for food security & income generation. In inland fisheries, Bangladesh's position is 2nd among the top ten fish producing countries of the world and among the top ten aquaculture producing countries Bangladesh’s position is sixth.Bangladesh possesses a wide range of fishes, prawns, lobsters and other crustaceans, molluscs, turtles and other fishery resources inhabiting its extensive marine and inland open waters. The total fish production of Bangladesh was estimated at 11,72,800 m tons in 1995. Inland open water fisheries contributed 73 percent of the total fish production. In 1987, Bangladesh became third in world inland fish and shrimp production after China and India and produced 5,81,827 m tons of fish and shrimp. Fisheries sector contributes 5.71% of total export earning and4.92% to the GDP. The sector contributes 22% of the total agricultural production & 63% of the total animal protein intake of the country. Present fish production(2007) is 2.56million tons, total marine catch is 497,573

    To address the recent challenges faced by the Shrimp sector in Bangladesh, the Market Development Forum (MDF) joined hands together with the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association (BFFEA), Fishery Products Business Promotion Council (FPBPC) and Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) and organized a seminar on “Shrimp Exports from Bangladesh: Prospects and Challenges” which identified the opportunities and challenges facing the sector, including nitrofuran residues, traceability and certification and proposed recommendations to address the challenges. Katalyst played a key role in the planning, executing and financing of this event along with IDE-Bangladesh and USAIDPRICE from the MDF members. The honorable Minister of Commerce delivered the inauguration speech, while the honorable Minister of Fisheries and Livestock delivered the closing speech of the seminar. Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Department of Fisheries, Export Promotion Bureau, Bangladesh Quality Support Program, Golda Hatchery Association of Bangladesh and many other public and private stakeholders actively participated in the seminar through presentations, speeches and discussions. The participation of Global Aquaculture Alliance and CP (Charoen Pokphand) Foods PLC made the seminar more effective due to the new information and valuable recommendations they brought in for our the Bangladesh shrimp export. The shrimp export had experienced a decline during 2009 due to global recession, natural calamities and a self-imposed ban on fresh water shrimp (prawn) exports to EU countries. The voluntary export ban was followed by over 60 rapid alerts this year from the EU countries due to the alleged discovery of traces of nitrofuran contamination in the exported prawn.     The economy of Bangladesh is rapidly developing market-based economy. According to the International Monetary Fund, Bangladesh ranked as the 43rd largest economy in the world in 2010 in PPP terms and 57th largest in nominal terms, among the Next Eleven or N-11 of Goldman Sachs and D-8 economies.
