In particular, Marjane’s identity changes after her Uncle Anoosh is executed. Marjane loved her beloved Uncle Anoosh. When she had her last few moments with him, she received a bread swan from him. After Anoosh was executed, Marjane yells at God, blaming him(p. 70). This affects Marjane’s identity because she loved Anoosh so much and for him to disappear from her life was a tremendous change. She is being sent away all by herself to a place she knows nothing about. While she is getting her suitcase checked, she turns around to see her family and sees that her mother had fainted, saying that it would have been better to just go(p. 153). Not only is she going by herself, but she is only 13. This changes Marjane’s identity because she is leaving her family for the first time and is forced to learn how to develop into the young lady she wants to become.
