Unscrupulous denotation is having or showing no moral principles; not honest or fair. While Machiavellian denotation is cunning, scheming. Mark Antony is both a unscrupulous person and Machiavellian. He is manipulative by using rhetoric devices to manipulate people, and Antony is also liar because he talks behind his allies back or he tricks his enemies, and finally he is not a faithful to his country when he causes chaos and harms the citizens.
One of the reason Mark Antony is unscrupulous is because he is deceitful and backstabbing. For instance when Antony is talking with Octavius he verbally abuses Lepidus, an ally “The threefold world divided, he should stand/ One
of the three to share it?” (4.1.16-17) Antony states that if the world is divided into three parts should one of them really be given to Lepidus. Even though Antony and Lepidus are allies and he promised Lepidus power Antony plans to not give him his share and use him as a pack mule. Lepidus was deceived by Antony because Lepidus will work hard for the triumvirate to win but will not gain any power as he should by joining the alliance. Another example is when he talks to the conspiracy after Caesar’s murder Antony states, “I doubt not of your wisdom. / let each man render me his bloody hand.” (3.1.200-201). Antony manages to convince almost all the conspirators that he has no intentions of opposing them by shaking their hands drenched in Caesar’s blood proving that Mark Antony is a deceitful person.
