Mark Knapp's Stages Of Relational Development
Everyone has had that a disastrous romantic relationship right? Either you and your boyfriend/girlfriend can’t decide to get alone, and you always break up. These type of relationships are modeled after Knapp’s Stages of Relational Development. This relationship theory was created by Mark Knapp. Knapp was a well known professor at the University of Texas. Knapp’s Stages of Relational Development shows how relationships grow and eventually fail. There are ten stages in total. I will explain these ten types of relationships while giving examples from one of my own relationships. The relationship I will be talking about is the relationship between me and my ex. Our relationship lasted for around 5 years on and off. Currently we aren’t together, …show more content…
During this stage, you actually get to know the person that your trying to have a relationship with. This is like asking them questions, like what are your favorite thing and what do you like. During this time, me and Jason and I usually talked about our favorite foods. I don’t know why we talked about food a lot, but that was one of the things that we had in common. During this time, I also learned about where he lived in the past, what schools he went to and even personal things like his middle name. He also learned things about me like what was my favorite movies and …show more content…
During this stage you get to know the other person in your relationship better. This step occurred during my freshman year of high school. Jason and I went to same high school together and we had science class together again. We were talking and one day he asked if he could have my number. I didn’t think anything of it because I saw him as a friend so we exchanged numbers. Late on that night we talked and he asked me out. I wanted to say no, but I didn’t think it would hurt, because I knew him as a nice and interesting person. So that particular day on November 11, 2011 we started dating.
The next stage is Bonding. During this time your relationship will go public. Your friendship or romantic relationship will start to become formal. At the beginning of our relationship our we decided to keep it private. We told each other that we wouldn’t tell anyone, but behind each others backs we told our best friends. This eventually led to the whole school knowing that we were dating. Everyone used to tease us because it was very unexpected. We didn’t have many things in common. This was the highest part of our relationship. I was happy. He was

I believe I am in this stage because I have already gone through the stage of adolescence/ young adulthood. I have asked the questions “Who am I? Where do I fit in?” I had a time where I was trying to figure out who I was as a person without anyone else, what I wanted out of life, where I felt like I belonged, but now I have answered those questions and moved on with my life. I have moved on to the intimacy vs. isolation stage and believe I am still in this stage. I am married and have been…

The third stage is the norming stage. During this stage, relationships among team members are becoming closer and group cohesiveness is coming together. The group identity is really becoming clear. This stage is considered complete when the structure of the group is completely solidified and the members of the group have decided on what is considered proper behavior for members of the group. This stage is during the first year to eighteen months of a life. A child is completely dependent upon others to satisfy their needs. If the child gets the satisfaction of the fulfillment and continues to receive the satisfaction on a regular basis, they will develop trust. Mistrust will develop if these needs are not fulfilled on a regular basis. If mistrust were to develop, the child would have trouble developing close relationships in the future.…

Lee came up with a similar process; he believed that relationship breakdown can be broken down into 5 processes. The first stage is where a person begins to feel dissatisfied within their relationship. The second stage is where the dissatisfaction felt is made apparent to the individuals’ partner. The third stage is where the couple discuss what is wrong with the relationship. The fourth stage is where the couple attempts to resolve the issues within their relationship and the last stage is if resolution does not occur the couple will separate.…

Romantic relationships are seen as “a joyful fusion of closeness [and] communication…” (McCornack, 2010, p. 322) These relationships provide more of a bond than a regular relationship connected with friends and people we know but aren’t close to. A romantic relationship is a chosen interpersonal involvement built through communication in which both people in the relationship see it as romantic. In the development of a relationship, there are five stages. In the phase McCornack calls “coming together” there are five stages: initiating, experimenting, intensifying, integrating, and bonding. The main stage I will be analyzing is the intensifying stage.…

The models and theories set out provide a clear set of processes that people go through during relationship breakdown. This therefore means that counsellors can help couples to identify areas where their relationship has started to go wrong and help the couple to tackle these issues. For example if the couple are in the intrapsychic phase (Duck 1999) counsellors should aim to help couples re-establish liking for each other rather than trying to correct behavioural faults. This suggests that research and explanations into the breakdown of relationships is useful as it can be used to improve the quality of people’s…

Relationships are special bonds between people that do not happen quickly. It takes time meet someone you would consider having a relationship with, and then it building that relationship can be tough. When having a romantic relationship it takes feelings, but it also takes two people to put in effort. The most important step of a relationship is building it, so if you cannot do that step it will not work. Joseph F. Newton once said “People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.” This quote proves that building a relationship is very important to a relationship; however it is not the only one. Seamus Heaney’s "Scaffolding" displays romantic relations, by describing the building of relationships, the stages of a relationship, and love.…
