Mark Sanford was born in 1960 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He moved to Beaufort, South Carolina right before his senior year of high school to live on Coosaw Plantation. He graduated from Beaufort Academy and continued his education by enrolling at Furman University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business. After he graduated from Furman he received a Master of Business Administration degree from Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. In 1992 he started Norton and Sanford Real Estate Investment, which is a leasing and brokerage company. All of his experience with business led him to start a career in politics.
He began his political career in 1994 when he entered the Republican primary for the Charleston based 1st Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. He finished second in the primary behind Van Hipp Jr. In the runoff he defeated Van Hipp Jr. and later defeated Robert Barber Jr. in the general election. Sanford was recognized as the most fiscally conservative member while in Congress. He stayed in office until 2001 when Henry Brown succeeded him. In 2002 he entered the gubernatorial election. He defeated Bob Peeler in the Republican primary and later Jim Hodges in the general election to become South Carolina’s 115th Governor. He was re-elected in 2006 when he defeated state senator, Tommy Moore. He had a steady run as a governor until his 2009 disappearance. From June 18 through June 24, 2009 the public, his wife, and the State Law Enforcement Division did not know his whereabouts. He told his staff that he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail. After evidence of his whereabouts began to surface, Sanford held a news conference where he admitted that he had an affair behind his wife’s back.
