Mark Twain

Mark Twain's works are some of the best I've ever read. I love the way he brings you into the story, especially with the dialogue used, like in Tom
Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain is my favorite dead author. Mark Twain was never "Mark Twain" at all. That was only his pen name. His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Samuel was born in Florida, Missouri in
1835. He accomplished worldwide fame during his lifetime for being a great author, lecturer, satirist, and humorist. Since his death on April 21, 1910, his great literary reputation has further increased. Many writers such as Ernest
Hemingway and William Faulkner have declared his work-especially Huckleberry
Finn- a major influence on 20th-century

During this time he became accustomed with much of the frontier humor of the time. From 1853 to 1857, Twain worked in many cities as a printer, and wrote articles for his brother's newspapers under various nicknames. After a visit to New Orleans, he learned how to pilot a steamboat. That became his job until the Civil War closed the Mississippi River, and it set him up for "Old Times on the Mississippi" and "Life on the Mississippi." In 1861, Twain traveled to Carson City, Nevada, with his brother Orion.
After attempts for silver and gold mining had failed, he continued to write for newspapers. It was in 1863 when Samuel Clemens adopted the name "Mark Twain", a riverman's term for "two fathoms" deep. In 1884 Twain went to San Francisco and reached national fame with his story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." He then took a trip to Hawaii which started him on a very successful career as a public speaker.
His trips to the Mediterranean and the Holy Land were recorded in letters to a
San Francisco newspaper, and later formed into The Innocents Abroad, which was popular all over the world. In 1870 Mark Twain married Olivia Langdon. He then abandoned journalism

Truman Capote was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 30, 1924. His parents were an odd pair, a small-town girl Lillie Mae and a schemer called Arch. They largely neglected their son when he was young, and often leaving him in the care of others. Capote spent much of his childhood in the care of his mother's relatives. He grew up in a small town and he also described the setting of In Cold Blood as a countryside with a small population. Capote did not attend college. Instead, he published a few famous short stories and novels, like "Other Voices, Other Rooms" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Finally, after living in Europe for many years, he returned to the United States and hoped to compose "an epic nonfiction novel." And that book was…

Mark Twain, American humorist and novelist, captured a world audience with stories of boyhood adventure and with commentary on man's shortcomings that is satirical while it probes, often bitterly, the roots of human behavior. Additionally, the many facets of Twain include: his incomparable humor, his revolutionary use of vernacular language, his exploration of the realities of American life, his irreverence and skepticism, his profound grappling with issues of race and his fearless opposition to the injustices and outrages of an imperialistic age. Illuminating a moral prompted by some deep and sincerely felt sentiment, Twain held strong faith in the clarity and cleansing possibilities of the written word. Maverick,…

Mark Twain wrote excellent books and gave great lectures ("Mark Twain"). What made Mark’s books fascinating was that during his life he studied everything around him and described them inside his books ("Welcome to the Mark…”). Even though Mark passed through a time of depression when his daughter died he still wrote books ("Welcome to the Mark…”). I feel like if Mark were still living people would have enjoyed his books more. That is because, his books would have been known more if he were living so more people could have read his books. In all, Mark was one of the greatest authors and will be greatly…

I chose Abraham Lincoln as a subject matter because he is the only American President I like. Of course, the rest of the world loves him very much as he is one of those big men who profoundly influenced their eras. He is not only an American President but also the president of common people. That is why his photograph was put on ‘'a penny''. In my paper there is a chronological order of important events from Abraham Lincoln's life. My paper starts with his family's settlement to Hingham, Massachusetts, continues with the birth of Abraham Lincoln and with simple events from his early childhood. After a brief explanation about Abraham's childhood and his…

A lie is universally perceived as immoral. In Mark Twain's "On The Decay of the Art of Lying" pointed out that sometimes lying can serve for the better good than a bitter truth. He said "the wise thing is for us diligently to train ourselves to lie thoughtfully, judiciously; to lie with a good object, and not an evil one; to lie for others' advantage." The lie that my mother committed was selfless and noble. She took all of my bad attitude and anger without complaining as long as I never change the way I see my dad. This lie was a mind-opener for that it made me realize so many things. It may have been a heart-breaking revelation but what came after that made the heart-break worth it. I've come to finally appreciate my mother and my family.…

Twain joined Orion, who in 1861 became secretary to James W. Nye, the governor of Nevada Territory, and headed west. Twain and his brother traveled more than two weeks on a stagecoach across the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, visiting the Mormon community in Salt Lake City. The experiences inspired Roughing It and provided material for The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Twain's journey ended in the silver-mining town of Virginia City, Nevada, where he became a miner. Twain failed as a miner and worked at a Virginia City newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise. Here he first used his pen name. On February 3, 1863, he signed a humorous travel account "Letter From Carson – re: Joe Goodman; party at Gov. Johnson's; music" with "Mark Twain."…
