Mark Waatney Character Analysis

Mark Watney (the main character), in my opinion, would make a very gook friend. First

Of all, he has a great sense of humor. It’s sarcastic, casual and it’s pretty similar to my own. For example, the way he worships duck tape: “Yes, of course, duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped.” or in chapter 11 when he questions: “How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re mammals! Makes no sense.”. He is a light-spirited person and if you were his friend you would be sure to share a laugh with him. Secondly, even though he hardly has real interaction with any other humans in the book, you can tell that he is a nice and understanding person because of the way that he is immediately concerned about his parents when he finds out that he is stranded on Mars. He forgives his crewmates as soon as he realized that they had left him on mars. He knew that they did

I was wondering if it was really possible for Mark to grow plants on Mars. I picked this subject because it seems a little far-fetched that a man could grow living organisms in space. And since the potatoes are his only food source for several years, It’s an important part of the novel.

One of the biggest problems of growing crops in space is the lack of gravity. On Mars, the gravity is actually not an issue. It may be a lot less than the levels on earth, but it is enough to keep the plants growing upright and to keep water flowing to their roots.

What about the soil? Wouldn't there be a deficiency of the essential plant

As analysis is conducted into the characters of both Chief Bromden and Randle McMurphy, it is easy to conclude that both have characteristics and preform actions that can be considered heroic. Physically both Bromden and McMurphy are huge. But, unlike McMurphy, Bromden does not have the self-confidence to match his gigantic exterior. This contrast in personality is due to the idea that Bromden has constantly been maltreated for the entirety of his life. McMurphy, on the other hand, refuses to be brought down because of his indomitable spirit.…

From these two chapters, it helped shows real character of Norman Bowker because he’s one of the person that doesn’t like to express his feelings too. From what I read he’s a very caring because the death of his friend caused so much pain for him where he didn’t let it go even after the war due to he wasn’t being a good leader. “The truth,” Norman Bowker would’ve said, “is I let the guy go” (147). The science of growing plants without soil has been known and used for more than one-hundred years. The word “hydroponics”, however, is comparatively new. Dr. W.E. Gericke is usually given credit for coining the word, which translated from Greek, means “working water”. The famous hanging gardens of Babylon were probably on of the first attempts to grow plants hydroponically. The work of Dr. Greicke in the 1920’s and 1930’s in California, however, is generally considered the basis for nearly all forms of hydroponics. During the 1940’s at Purdue University, Robert B. and Alice P. Withrow developed another hydroponic method. Their process was called Nutriculture. Nutriculture varied from Dr. Gericke’s method in that gravel was used as a rooting medium.…

They have been searching the red planet for life and have come up short in finding Martians, for the most part. Now, even though big green “Martians” that we all are familiar with because of Hollywood depictions have not been found; there could very well be microorganisms deep to the planet’s surface. John Prytz has written an article explaining the findings of life on mars. In the article, Life on Mars, he states:…

For centuries people have speculated about the possibility of life on Mars owing to the planet's proximity and similarity to Earth. Serious searches for evidence of life began in the 19th century, and continue via telescopic investigations and landed missions. While early work focused on phenomenology and bordered on fantasy, modern scientific inquiry has emphasized the search for chemical biosignatures of life in the soil and rocks at the planet's surface, and the search for biomarker gases in the atmosphere.[1] Fictional Martians have been a recurring feature of popular entertainment of the 20th and 21st centuries, and it remains an open question whether life currently exists on Mars, or has existed there in the past.…

Plants are organisms that grow and reproduce their own kind. They need for, air, soil, water, light, and space to grow. Plants need soil. Water and minerals are taken from the soil through roots. Soil also provides support for the plant and an anchor for the roots to grow in. Decaying plants and animals leave behind minerals in the soil that are essential for future plant growth. Plants need sunlight in order to grow properly. They use light energy to change the materials - carbon dioxide and water into food substances (sugars). This process of food productions is called photosynthesis. Only in light can a green plant make food. Plants most also have clean air. Green plants take in carbon dioxide from air and use it during photosynthesis to make food. Dirty, smoggy air blocks sunlight that plants must have. Plants need water. Water is essential to all life on earth. No known organism can exist without water. Plants use water to carry moisture and nutrients from the roots to he leaves and food from the leaves back down to the roots. Plants must also have space in order to grow. Plants are found everywhere - deserts, mountains, arctic regions, forests, jungles, oceans, and even in cracks of sidewalks of busy cities. If the space is small, the plants will be small and stunted. Big plants need big spaces for their roots and branches.…
