Q&A - What is the role of sampling in market research?
Market research involves the collection of data to obtain insight and knowledge into the needs and wants of customers and the structure and dynamics of a market. In nearly all cases, it would be very costly and time-consuming to collect data from the entire population of a market. Accordingly, in market research, extensive use is made of sampling from which, through careful design and analysis, marketers can draw information about the market.
Designing the sample: Sample design covers the method of selection, the sample structure and plans for analyzing and interpreting the results. Sample designs can vary from simple to complex and depend on the type of information required and the way the sample is selected. Sample design affects the size of the sample and the way in which analysis is carried out. In simple terms the more precision the market researcher requires, the more complex will be the design and the larger the sample size. The sample design may make use of the characteristics of the overall market population, but it does not have to be proportionally representative. It may be necessary to draw a larger sample than would be expected from some parts of the population; for example, to select more from a minority grouping to ensure that sufficient data is obtained for analysis on such groups. Many sample designs are built around the concept of random selection. This permits justifiable inference from the sample to the population, at quantified levels of precision. Random selection also helps guard against sample bias in a way that selecting by judgement or convenience cannot.
Defining the Population: The first step in good sample design is to ensure that the specification of the target population is as clear and complete as possible to ensure that all elements within the population are represented. The target population is sampled using a sampling frame.

Methodology for Selecting a Sample Population . Your Capstone Project will focus on a specific sample population for future research. In this discussion, you will need to do two things. First, explain the attributes of the sample population that you plan to study. Then explain the research methodology you will use to study that population. Will you use a quantitative approach, qualitative approach, or a mixture of both? Which approach do you find most valuable and why?…

A non-probability sample design will be used for collecting data. However, to select effectively a sample design certain questions must be answered. They include, “What is the target population? What are the parameters of interest? What is the sampling frame? What is the appropriate sampling method? What size sample is needed” (Cooper & Schindler, 2011,…

The core of biostatistics consists of the definition of a population and sampling, as they are the indicators of the fundamental concepts that are essential to understanding the statistics of the life and health sciences. The idea that a sample is illustrative of a given population, since a sample is derived from a specific, yet larger pool of information seems factually representative. Random sampling aides research in that it applies experimental design to the selection process and is the fairest means of sample collection, providing equal chance to the members of a given population being signified.…

In the planning stage, there are three steps. The first step is determining the objective. This is directly related to the question of interest or the purpose of conducting the sample. The second step is defining the characteristic of interest. This is a critical step in the sampling process of planning because it is the measure that will be obtained from the sample items that is evaluated against a criterion that is related to the objective. The third and final step within the planning stage is defining the population. Although it seems very simple, this must be defined in a way that meets the objective of the sampling application. Thus, when defining the population you cannot be too specific or too broad in…

The value of the representative sample is that it gives us the chance to observe and analyze different populations on a most economic and less time consuming way, because the observations made on the base of the representative sample could depicture on a reliable way the characteristics of the population that we are interested in without the need to observe all the samples in the population. That’s way the representative sample is the best way to analyze relatively big populations.…
