Marketers Persue the Shallow Pocketed
Is the information being discussed in this article another example of colonialism? Why or why not? Identify two potential positives and two negatives direct marketing of the poor has on people and their economies. What theory of development is most applicable to the expansion of global markets to poor, low income, and indigenous communities?

After reading the information in chapter 8 and the information in the article, “Marketers pursue the shallow pocketed”, it is my conclusion that the information being discussed in this article is a clear example of colonialism. As stated in the textbook, Colonialism tended to deprive a society not only of its wealth and freedom, but also of its very character, leaving the local people intellectually and morally disoriented (Fanon, 1963), this is a lot like the article which shows that marketing to the poor has become a very hot subject.

Identify two potential positives and two negatives direct marketing of the poor has on people and their economies.

One positive thing that direct marketing of the poor has on people and their economies is that the people will be able to purchase items they need and want at lower prices. Another positive aspect of direct marketing is that the economy improves as more money is being spent.

One of the negative aspects of direct marketing is that products will be provided in excess however the items may be of a lower quality, and the second negative aspect is that the poor people are being encouraged to purchase unnecessarily and perhaps overindulging in things that are not necessarily needed.

Drew Hayden Taylor’s “This Boat Is My Boat” and Naomi Klein’s “Local Foreign Policy” are similar in several ways as both essays talk about marketing. Despite the fact that the authors of the stories are from different regions of the world, the message that is sent in their essays is about exploitation. Advertising, this very term once used to express as a tool to inform customers about a particular brand or a product. But, now-a-days, it is argued to be one of the most powerful, convincing, manipulative and persuasive vehicles of the companies to provoke customers toward materialism and consumption (Treise, et al. 1994). This influence sometimes crosses the limit by jumping over the fence of ethical responsibility of a company toward consumers. Even a more serious concern is that, they tend to target their advertising toward more vulnerable groups such as children, minorities and the disadvantaged (Treise, et al. 1994). While these firms are creating a rich and growing revenue structure, children and their family are facing growing difficulty in life; both physically and psychologically.…

The vastness of globalization has impacted a majority of nations across the world. One way of looking at Globalization through the advantages and disadvantages of its nature is to overlook society’s changes from generation to generation. The complexities of convergence through trade and social processes establish a variety of commodities between cultures. People don 't like feeling like just another nameless, faceless wallet. Direct mail campaigns target them individually by addressing them by name or explaining how the advertised products meet their individual needs. Companies often choose direct mail selling because it allows them to virtually reach out to consumers on a one-on-one basis by segmenting their consumer or potential consumer base to find those who share similar characteristics. This provides a higher potential for success.…

Direct marketing is very important and very useful to facilitate customers to communicate directly with the dealer or an insurance agent. but direct marketing today is less well-received because customers prefer to use interactive marketing compared to direct marketing. this is because a lot of direct marketing disrupt customers' personal time. for example calling an insurance agent at the time the call is not appropriate eg when customers are enjoying dinner with the family. Direct marketing is also very to force customers to buy their insurance. This will make customers feel uncomfortable because they are forced.…
