Code of conduct is a central guideline and reference for users in support of day to day decision making. It is meant to clarify an organization mission, values, and principals relating them with a standard of professional conduct. The code of conduct can be used to locate necessary documents, services, and other resources related to ethics within the organization. In other words, it is a written set of guidelines issued by and organization to its workers and management to help them conduct their actions in accordance with its primary values and ethical standards. It is important to ensure that the employees follow the code of conduct. Chipotle for example has a code of conduct that must be followed to support day to day decision making. Their code of conduct includes an integrity statement, anti-discrimination, harassment, and sexual harassment policy, “It’s the law” and “chipotle confidential“. All employees should know their code of conduct so they are able to understand what is expected of them in terms of standards and values.
Chipotle has many key areas of their code of conduct. The main significance of their code of conduct is their integrity statement. Chipotle is a company based of integrity. Integrity is about being real and being honest- doing the right thing when no one is looking. Chipotle requires that anything you participate in are ethical and within the law, both in letter and in spirit. Another key area with chipotle code of conduct is “acceptance of gifts”. This states they should not accept gifts from competitors, suppliers, vendors, potential vendors, or business entities with which they are conducting on behalf of chipotle. Along with that, gifts should never be accepted unless it’s not a cash gift, it is consistent with customary business practices, it is not excessive in value (under 150$), it cannot be contracted as a bribe or payoff, it does not violate any law or regulation.
