Given our busy day-to-day lives, we often place people and things that are not important as a priority in our lives. This often creates the suffering we endure and bring into areas of our lives that should be off limits. Because of this, we often take advantage of the everyday pleasures life has to offer. After reading “Suffering is not enough,” of Being Peace by Thich Nhat Hanh, I’ve come to learn that we must not only be in touch with everything that is around us, but we must also be mindful of the present moment.…

For centuries, society has shaped these abstract ideas of what happiness means and how one could achieve happiness in their lives. However, in order to even understand what actions could lead to one’s happiness, one must be able to understand the definition of happiness itself. Having read Charles Dicken’s book Great Expectations, happiness persists as a pleasure or sense of a meaningful and rich psychosocial integration in a person’s understanding of himself or herself.…

They got tuh go tuh God, and they got tuh find out about livin’ fuh theyselves” (192). The only way Janie was going to find happiness was to go out and find it on her own. A good life is defined differently for everyone. Our parents, friends, and the media all comprise a vision that we see as the best way of experiencing our lives. This is different for every person, because nobody follows the exact same path in life, and events influencing someone’s existence are what eventually set the course for one‘s perception of a good, fulfilling, purposeful life. Although I don’t necessarily agree that my life would be better if it were suddenly made much simpler, there are people in the world who believe that the best thing one could ask for is simplicity.…

Although happiness itself seems to be desirable among people, when it comes to overall topic, most people would agree that being truly happy is a goal they strive for but fail to understand what that actually means. John Stuart Mill, an English philosopher and author, argues that one can only be happy if they focus something aside from their own happiness, like helping friends and family or the community. While I agree with Mill’s view on not over-occupying ourselves with the need to be happy, I have to add that focusing on one’s own happiness is also a necessity. In my view, people can only give so much to others so focusing on friends and family can help find a healthy balance in their life.…

The “Pleasant Life” is living your life with as much pleasure and positivity as possible and using your skills to increase your happiness (Tiller 2012). However, there are shortcomings to the “pleasant life” which are that people tend to get bored of the activities that make them happy and that is lacks flexibility. Seligman’s research has contributed to the field of positive psychology by helping people acquire the skills to be able to handle life in a more positive way. According to Seligman, there are three components of happiness: 1) pleasure, 2) engagement with one’s family, work, romance, and 3) meaning (Wallis 2005). Each type of happiness is connected to positive emotions with a sequence from gratification to strengths to purpose.…

Bentham and James Mill understand happiness hedonistically, as consisting in pleasure, and they believe that the ultimate aim of each person is predominantly, if not exclusively, the promotion of the agent's own happiness. Mill rejects their psychological egoism and significantly modifies their assumptions about happiness when he introduces his doctrine of higher pleasures. To appreciate Mill's innovations here, we need to understand some aspects of the Radical legacy he…
