Competitors

Currently there are three main competitors to Square that offers similar advantages to small business owners. Square, PayPal Here, Intuit GoPayment, and VeriFone PAYware Mobile offer individuals and merchants alike the opportunity to accept debit and credit cards on their iOS, Android smartphone or tablet computer. Square, however, is the only company of the four competitors that markets two applications and services, Square Register and Square Wallet. Square Register acts as a merchant services aggregator allowing business owners the ability to accept payments either by entering card details or swiping the card through the Square Reader. The Square Wallet gives the ability to customers to set up an account to allow them to pay for their services or product simply by the use of a barcode.

Economic Environment

Square is a perfect product for the current economic state with declining sales rates and skyrocketing fees and expenses. The service allows for business owners and individuals to accept debit and credit cards, the preferred method of payment by most consumers, without utilizing expensive traditional merchant services aggregators. Square provides card readers for free to its customers and this allows new small business owners to save on expenses of having to rent merchant equipment. Individuals without store-fronts can also benefit from Square as the product is essentially priceless until a transaction is made.

Demographic Environment

As a result of the economic crisis, many business owners have had to leave their store-fronts and operate out of homes. Many individuals and business owners have had to look for ways to minimize expenses at all costs. A lot of

The mobile payment industry is one of the fastest growing industries today, with transactions up 60% from last year. Square has established itself as an industry leader within the US, with sales of $110 billion last year. In 2009, the mobile commerce market generated $18.3 billion in total revenue. By 2015 it’s projected to reach over $119 billion. When it comes to m-commerce, eBay has jumped in with both feet. It is estimated to hold about 3.3 percent of m-commerce, compared to online retailer Amazon’s 1.5 percent. It also was estimated to sell $1.5 billion in goods via m-commerce in 2010, compared to $600 million in 2009. eBay launched its first mobile application for the iPhone in July 2008 and has since produced 14 apps, including eBay Selling, StubHub, Deals, and Fashion. eBay’s core iPhone application has been downloaded 14 million times, and its entire stable of apps has seen over 30 million downloads worldwide. Purchases range from clothing and accessories to sporting event and concert tickets, computers and technology gadgets, collectables, and even luxury automobiles. Research indicates that more than half of regular m-commerce purchasers are comfortable spending over $100 on a mobile purchase, and 14 percent are willing to spend over $1,000.…

With eBay focusing on PayPal as the primary engine of its growth, we take a deeper look at the value of the Payments unit, and its growth opportunities over the coming years. We continue to believe the upper range of the company’s outlook for $4B-$5B in F’11 revenues could be difficult to reach, but think $4B could be achievable. At a 20x multiple to our F’11E segment Net Income, the PayPal business would be worth $9B. • Off-eBay growth will be key. We estimate that, by 2011, eCommerce and online travel will combine to be over $1 trillion worldwide, up from $770B in 2008. By our estimates, PayPal accounted for ~4.2% of the off-eBay volume of combined eCommerce and travel last year. We believe the number would need to rise to more than 6.0% in F’11 in order for the company to meet the low end of its F’11 revenue target. • Increasing on-eBay penetration remains a driver. The maturation of PayPal in international markets can be a key catalyst for increasing penetration, as the low-hanging fruit on the domestic site has largely been picked. Further, expanding credit offerings to make PayPal a viable option for higher-ticket items can help offset sluggish GMV growth. • BillMeLater should improve longer-term funding mix. Segment margins in the two quarters since the BML acquisition have been down 500 bps Y/Y. However, because BML is funded through ACH, we think it can improve PayPal’s funding mix, and eventually drive better margins. • Brand is a valuable asset. Alone among online-only players, PayPal has established a payment brand to compete with incumbent players such as Visa and MasterCard. We believe PayPal can continue to push penetration as an alternative payment platform; alternatively, PayPal could try to expand its footprint in the payments ecosystem and become a merchant acquirer, focusing especially on smaller and mid-size merchants.…

Until recently food service trucks only accepted cash from customers, but new digital tools such as Square and GoPayment allow the users to accept credit card payments via mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad, and Android. These tools have opened up a new realm for food service trucks customers to pay for their meals. This has been a huge break-through for the food service truck owners because it minimizes their worry over whether customers will have enough cash to pay for their food order. In some cities, Foodtoeat.com is equipping food trucks with GPRS printers to wirelessly receive online orders in seconds. This allows the food service truck owner to…

For creating a new kind of mobile, social, and local retailer and streamlining point-of-sale payments.
