This caused Billy’s story to be out of order. While in the war, Billy would “time travel” to events that occurred after and this showed that as much as Billy didn’t want to live during the war, he would survive. Vonnegut may have done this to show what the Tralfamadorians taught Billy; how everything happens is inevitable and you cannot change it as much as you want to. Even though both journeys were very different, each character was affected greatly by what they found. The Tralfamadorians taught Billy that there is no free will and everything is already predetermined. Billy really believed this and knew how and when he was going to die, he never tried to change this. Billy even thought what the Tralfamadorians taught him was so important that he wanted to share their lessons with everyone else. When Marlow finally meets Kurtz, he doesn’t think of him as an idol anymore and sees him as a selfish man that just wants to become rich and powerful. While learning about Kurtz, Marlow also begins to learn about himself. Marlow hears Kurtz’s last words “The horror! The horror!” and respects him because he had something to say and he said it. From this point on, Kurtz had such a lasting effect on Marlow that made him eager to carry out his legacy. He changed Marlow to the point where he would even lie, something that he once used to despise, but would do it again to protect Kurtz’s reputation. In both the novels Heart of Darkness and Slaughterhouse Five, the main character learns from what they encounter in different ways, but they both meet someone or something that changes how they feel about their lives and themselves. Both men went through experiences that changed them even though they were very different journeys. In each book it shows how much something or someone can affect someone's life and changed their entire viewpoint. It contributes to each book as a whole to show how characters grow on a life-changing
