Mars Darkest Days Analysis
1. In “Mars: Darkest Days,” I was able to learn that Mars can have dust storms that could last for months. This dust storms can be 20 to 30 kilometers high and they could cover the whole planet. Thus, if someone is relying on energy from the solar panels they could be in trouble. I also learned that the dust storms can have lightning and if a person inhales the dust, then they could get health problems.
2. The science I learned from the psychological isolation is it can bring stress to the person, it is also an emotional strain, the person can also have insomnia which could lead into hallucinations.

Sometimes when people think about the calming sound of a night-time melody, the catchy beat of a popular song, or simply the words in a poem that captures how you feel and you can perfectly relate to. What comes to mind when we mention a poem? Usually what people think or what people’s thoughts go to, are emotions and rhyme. I think it takes a little more of each person’s perspective into the situation, not only the writer’s but also the reader’s perspective, which is what gives that extra spark to the piece. The literary element that is the most important to bring a poem to life is imagery; it would help the reader…

It can refer to anything like the pain of excessive guilt, humiliation, loneliness, fear, or anything that causes psychological pain. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, alienation means “a withdrawing or separation of a person or a person's affections from an object or position of former attachment (“Alienation”). It results in loneliness, emptiness, and despair. In “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” by J.D. Salinger, Seymour Glass is a man who had just come back from fighting in a war. He cannot relate to adults, especially his wife, Muriel, and the people at the resort he is staying at who are all narcissistic and live lavishly. Seymour is the most comfortable around children, especially Sybil, whom he meets on the beach at the resort. He lives through his ideal world with Sybil full of innocence, purity, and…

Specifically, the isolation from others diminishes the quality of one’s mind. In the article Mass Hysteria at Old Salem Village, the author mentions “Outbreaks of mass psychogenic illness typically occur in closed social settings” (Bartholomew 12). While Salem was not completely isolated, individuals in the town were. The accused witches, who were imprisoned, were isolated from the others in the village. The lack of social interaction most likely played a role in the weakening of the mind. The conditions that were endured potentially caused the accusations to continue. Those who were mistreated in the Salem Witch Trials not only suffered physically, but also…

Dissociation can be a major detrimental experience because it brutally diminishes one’s ability to remain present, or just be simultaneously at the same place both physically and mentally. Martha Stout relates dissociation to fuses burning out when electrical wiring overloads: “ Like the outdated fuse box, the psychologically traumatized brain houses inscrutable eccentricities that cause it to overreact –or more precisely, misreact –to the current realities of life. These misreactions become established because trauma…” (Pg. 382) It other words, it is very harmful to someone especially when he or she wants to progress or even overcome the unbearable psychological trauma and developmental problems that prevent the person from remaining fully activated, since…

He also goes to say most adjusted after a month or two but those who stayed the longest had their humanity almost obliterated. So the reader can infer that longer periods of time in isolated areas can have very permanent, long lasting effects. Also in the article, “What Does Solitary Confinement Do To Your Mind?”, researchers at McGill University had male graduate students go through an experiment where all of their senses were dulled, like that of solitary confinement, and some even went as far as having hallucinations (Breslow) much like in Night when Mrs. Schächter in the cattle car when she’s seeing fire (Wiesel). None of the subjects were able to last more than seven days. The conclusion of the experiment came sooner than originally thought and was simple, the people put in solitary confinement are, most likely, going to go…

Forced isolation of McMurphy and the social isolation of Simon eventually lead to saddening deaths but perhaps the most shattering is the suicide of John. Self-inflicted isolation creates many internal barriers psychologically, which are much harder to break down than external barriers such as the ones experienced by Simon or McMurphy. When McMurphy goes against the instituted rules of the ward, authoritative figures carry out his punishment. On the other hand, John was his own authoritative figure and was far more brutal on himself than any other person would have been. He did not let himself forget his transgressions easily and brutally punished himself if he did. This internal conflict within the confines of a mind leads to more insurmountable barriers than an external conflict between two individuals. Though present in many forms, isolation, a detrimental barrier that arises because of many reasons, eventually leads to one common effect: the degradation of psychological health and perception of…

Schizophrenia one of the more common psychological disorders, also called mental illnesses. Schizophrenia affects behavior as well as thoughts, and encompasses many different things, including auditory hallucinations and mood swings. At some point this disorder may even manifest itself into a psychotic phase that involves delusions and disorganized speech along with bizarre behavior. People who have schizophrenia believe that the hallucinations are real, and even if they don’t believe that the hallucination is real, it seems real. The way that schizophrenia manifests itself is different from person to person. Some people can manage to live life fully independently with schizophrenia, and with medication can keep it under control. However, other people may never be able to function fully, and will not be able to live on their own due to the delusions and hallucinations. In severe progressions of this disorder, people lose the ability to keep in touch with reality, and become paranoid and anti-social, while often being petrified of the hallucinations that they live with.…
