Martial Law
Ferdinand Marcos, who succeeded the presidency after defeating Macapagal in the 1965 Presidential election, As a president of the Philippines, Marcos spends millions in infrastructural development such as roads, health centers and schools as well as intensifying tax collection; he built more schools than all the presidents did.
In November 1969, Marcos had won the reelection for the presidencies, he defeat Sergio Osmeña Jr. because the election accompanied by violence and full of lying with the use of money. This term began with increasing civil disorder, price increase in all goods, and unable to reduce the government graft and corruption that results in economical and political crisis. The communist party of the Philippines formed the New Peoples Army headed by Jose Maria Sison while the Moro National Liberation Front that fought for the Mindanao independency.
Marcos also created a fake ambush to Enrile to have amore proof to proclaim Martial Law. In Aug.21, 1971, when liberal party proclaiming their senatorial slate in Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila; several people were killed and Marcos suspended the Writ of Habeas Corpus after the blast. Marcos declared Martial Law in September 21, 1972 by the proclamation 1081. Martial Law remained active until 1981 because Marcos was re-elected with the use of violence and money to ensure his presidency. He also deactivated press freedom and closed all the media and establishments that are against Ferdinand Marcos. He also ordered to arrest the opposition leaders and activist, including his mortal enemy, Benigno “NINOY” Aquino JR. and senator Jose Diokno. Aquino and Diokno put in jail. Gross National Product and tourism had grown during the martial law period and the crime rates decreases. Marcos Suddenly suspended the Martial Law because Pope John Paul II will visit the Philippines but the government power still continuous their arresting and detention to those who against his administration. Ninoy send to US to cure his heart problem and he stay there for the longtime. On August 21, 1983, Benigno “NINOY” Aquino Jr., assassinated at the Manila International Airport upon his return to the Philippines. This event encouraged new and more powerful wave of anti-Marcos.
Marcos called a SNAP ELECTION to prove to Anti-Marcos that he still trusted by the Filipino People. His opponents, Corazon Aquino, the widow of Ninoy, declared themselves as the new president of the Philippines. Marcos won that presidency because of a massive fraud and violence he did in that election. The people who canvassed the votes, boycotted the presidential election and go to Aquino’s side. All the pro-Marcos left him especially Gen. Fidel V. Ramos and Enrile declared that their no longer the supporters of Marcos. That is the time when “PEOPLE POWER” emerged in the Philippines and that is the reason why Marcos left his title as the president and fly to Hawaii with the help of his friend, the US president. This peaceful revolution exiled Marcos and Installed Aquino as the President on 25th of Feb.1986.
The implementation of martial law change the way of living of every Filipino. In our eyes and judgment we can easily say that Martial Law is bad and evil, yet this Law has a positive outcome. There are several things that this law provides to the Filipinos, it help to improve the economic status, because martial law different schools and building are built to improve the education of the Filipino people. It also increases the Philippine Gross National Product and the tourism of the Philippines. The crime rates are also decrease because of the martial law.
After 27 years, the Philippines also have the same culture of poverty, iis mention in the film that there is a economic crisis and as we all know 5that if there is economic crisis because of price increase, there is a sign of poverty in that country. The culture of corruption is still in the government, we can easily see that today. Government officials tried there best to win the political election because they all know that there is a double return on there investment or capital to run their elections.
People here in the Philippines forget what Marcos’s did just to remain as the most powerful in this country. They forget how Marcos corrupts the money of the Filipinos. They forget the brutality of Marcos just to obtain his objectives to implement the Martial Law. Today, Marcos’s are part of the government again, his son as the senator of the Philippines, and also his wife and daughter are in government positions. I cannot imagine of what tomorrow will bring if that national amnesia will still on our personality as a Filipino. Today, we only celebrating EDSA PEOPLE POWER because it happens and become a trademark of the Philippines but we do not seek for the reason why this happened.

During the 1800’s, one of America’s biggest issues was slavery. Most people didn’t have a problem with it and agreed with it, but there was also groups called abolitionists, that greatly disliked slavery and devoted their lives to try to put an end to it. Slaves were denied basic human rights that people take for granted everyday, and were treated unfairly. Rights that I believe everyone should be able to have were denied to slaves. Some of these rights include: the ability to have a legal marriage, own property, eat the fruit from the crops they were raising, and they didn’t have much of a say in whether or not their family would stay together or not.…

On September 21, 1972, Marcos issued Proclamation 1081, declaring martial law over the entire country , claiming that it was the last defense against the rising disorder caused by increasingly violent student demonstrations, the alleged threats of communist insurgency by the new Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), and the Muslim separatist movement of theMoro National Liberation Front (MNLF). One of his first actions was to arrest opposition politicians in Congress and the Constitutional Convention. Initial public reaction to martial law was mostly favourable except in Muslim areas of the south, where a separatist rebellion, led by the MNLF, broke out in 1973. Despite halfhearted attempts to negotiate a cease-fire, the rebellion continued to claim thousands of military and civilian casualties. Communist insurgency expanded with the creation of the National Democratic Front (NDF), an organization embracing the CPP and other communist groups.…

The 1973 Constitution basically changes the ‘presidential system’ of government into a ‘parliamentary system’ that puts the President into a purely symbolic statue. Therefore the president didn’t actually hold any power and wasn’t allowed to be in any political party. The president still existed but there would be a Prime Minister who was the head of the government and Commander-in-chief of the army; Marcos would take that position. In short term, the three branches of government would be foregone and Marcos would control both the army and the government. It is ironic that amendment was solely to continue to put Marcos in power. Prominent manipulation by Marcos gave him the executive power to himself and it did work described as a ‘authoritarian-run Presidential System’.…

The proclamation was timed near the end of his second and last legal term. With the obvious intent of perpetuating himself in power, Ferdinand E. Marcos ostensibly used the engulfing menace of Communism as a reason for the imposition of Martial Law. Among other acts, the dictatorial government immediately moved to suspend media operations. Due to the mass communication nature of advertising,…

Even after the martial law, social movements still existed because the basic issues remained ignored by the state. Post-Martial Law period was a transition between the authoritarianism to democracy. Therefore, they are challenged to find ways on how to take advantage of the resources available under the new political dispensation. The three dominant social movements in this era are the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), New People’s Army (NPA) and National Democratic Front (NDF). There came a coalition between these three and with other organizations to have a greater force because according to Morales, “no single organization could win power legally and govern effectively alone and for itself.” CPP-NPA-NDF continues to be part of social movements that are influenced by the concept of revolution. They wanted to sweep away the current social and political institutions in order to attain the desired development. In order to address this, they identify the political opportunity structures and other strategies which could help them in the pursuit of democratization. First, was creating a broad coalition front based on the people’s concerns. It was an easier way to gain support from the people who are the ones that are greatly affected with the issues like sudden increase on prices of basic commodities. These are the peasants, workers and the urban poor. Second is through electoral politics. This was given impetus by the party-list system which allotted the maximum of three seats in the House of Representatives. It was a strategy to intervene in the decision-making of the government. These social movements also had taken advantage of the developing information and communication technology. This had helped them to communicate effectively and have enhanced the mission of the social movements.…
