Many African-Americans were attacked and killed for no reason other than the color of their skin. One example is the Emmett Till murder. According to the book Eyes on the Prize, Emmett Till was a 14-year-old African-American who traveled from his home in Chicago to Mississippi. He was kidnapped and viciously tortured before being shot in the head. The convicted men were found not guilty at court. Another example is from the book Leon’s Story, Leon Tillage was a young African-American man who had a white man sic a dog on him in a tavern parking lot. The people from the tavern came out and made bets on if he would jump from the top of his boss's car to the safety of a tree. Leon had other traumatizing events in his life such as his father being dragged to his death across the ground from a car and children throwing stones at him on his way home from school. These examples of assault are just some of the many attacks on African-Americans; combined they made a powerful cause for Civil Rights
