To understand Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s role in civil disobedience, one must first have knowledge of his personal life. Dr. King was an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He was born January 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin was the first son but the second child (Martin). His parents are Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta King (Birth). His original name was Micheal Luther King, Jr. but changed his name (Martin). Dr. King graduated at age fifteen, while shortly after he got a B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College. After studying for three years at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania he was elected as class president in a class with mostly whites (Dr. Martin). In Boston 1952, he was introduced to Coretta Scott by Mary Powell and got married on June 18th, 1953 in her parent’s yard in Marion, Alabama. Coretta and Martin had four kids: two boys and two girls. There was more than 200,000 people involved in his march to Washington (History). Multiple organizations went to Washington D.C. August 28th, 1963 (Bio). Dr. King was inspired by many people including his father. King’s father influenced his religious beliefs and the peaceful teachings of Gandhi (MLK). He protested the unjust society to show the government on how unfairly the blacks were being treated (Luther). Dr. King used Ghandi’s non-violent method of civil disobedience (Non). King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, October 14th for his nonviolent resistance to racial prejudice in America at the age of 35 (nobel). It took a strong leader to believe in peace and justice to gain more freedom for African Americans (Laws). Dr. King was a well known civil rights leader and activist. Civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase,” (Brainy). Dr. King wanted people to know that having faith is about trust. Everything that we have faith in we don't know if its going to go good or bad but we still do it. He wants people to join him in his protest to finally gain equality (What). Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the more well known civil rights activist. He had many great accomplishments in his life; None greater than the march on Washington. He lead of 200,000 people o the Lincoln Memorial (Greatest). On the tragic day April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee Martin Luther King Jr. was on the balcony of his hotel when James Early Ray fired a single shot at King. He was about 200 foot away from him and shot him in the neck. Dr King died one hour later at St. Joseph’s Hospital; the death of this civil rights leader sparked riots (Assassinated).
