People all over the world know that Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. did great things in their life times. They were civil right activists who took a form of action to obtain equal rights amongst their society. But which one was more effective during his time? Martin Luther King is very brave for being black in his time. Because you never knew what the government was going to do to you for protesting, boycotting, or striking. They would spray water on you. Sick the dogs on you. Sometimes even put you on a blacklist. Even some time they would send you to jail. Like Martin Luther King got sent to jail just for speaking. So to speak in public was very tough for being black. So that’s why I think he is very brave. He stood up to the white man. When he got sent to jail that didn’t stop him if anything that helped him. Because that got him going it made him angry that he got sent to jail. The government made it looks like he did something worse than what he actually did. So that made the letter from the Birmingham jail comes to life.…

In the 1950’s King went on a trip to India and that trip affected him deeply, increasing his commitment to the civil rights struggle. This showed how hard working he was, an important quality for a civil rights activist. King learned how Ghandi succeeded in India’s independence movement agaisnt the British. He wanted to apply what he learned from Ghandi to his own goal which was being inspirational and not using violence to get equality. Throughout their lives, Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were role models in the continuous battle against racism. They both gave powerful speeches on racism; however their intentions were delivered with different styles and purposes. King had a more positive and idealistic approach compared to Malcolm X's more pessimistic views. King was hopeful in believing that someday blacks would achieve full equality with whites. Non–violent demonstrations and arguments were King's techniques in reaching equality. Malcolm X on the other hand viewed non-violence and integration as a way of the whites keeping the blacks in their places. Malcolm X showed more fury towards white racism and encouraged more protest against white racists than King did. Although Malcolm X is more of an extremist, both men ultimately wanted respect for one's culture and history.…

Despite the striking differences of methods between the two civil rights leaders, there were a few similarities between these two leaders. They both believed that blacks suffered from great injustice and prejudice. King felt that all people were affected by the existing injustices that the few were suffering. Malcolm X preferred a more confrontational method of action, but also recognized the fact that blacks had been oppressed for too long. The goals of both men originated from their common racial heritage and history. To raise the issue of social injustice for the world to see and from there force changes was the intent of both men. Malcolm X and Dr. King also shared the…
