Not many people are treated as equals in the state of Afghanistan which causes a lot of conflict throughout the book. The government has complete control over the people especially after the Soviet Union took control. In the book it states, “ I betrayed him, yet he rescued me” (105). This quote refers to when the character Amir had seen Hassan in trouble and didn't do anything about it. A Hazara servant is very loyal and would do anything to help someone else in need or in trouble. This refers to Hassan. Amir on the other hand did not have any respect for someone of the opposite ethnicity during his early years and couldn't help him even if it was life or death.“My family would have never accepted her as an equal” (99). This quote shows that if someone is in a lower class or has a different ethnicity you are not ‘allowed’ to treat them as an equal. Sunnis had a lot more rights and power over Hazaras and the Sunni people took advantage of this and treated the Hazara people like dirt on their shoes. “ In afghanistan owning anything American specially if it was second handed, was a sign or wealth” (104) This shows that wealth and how you are treated by others is decided by what kind of clothes you own and where you got them from.
