Mary And Julie Monologue
MARY is driving CHARLIE to her farm an hour outside of Tweedbank which is located somewhere in the Scottish Borders to where her and her family live. MARY and CHARLIE are having a personal discussion.
MARY
Can you believe it, Rose has already done a year of university!
CHARLIE
Holy shit really?! The last time I saw her, she just finished her GCSE's. Where is she at again?
MARY
She's at Edinburgh Napier studying English Literature.
CHARLIE
That's crazy. I really hope she's enjoying herself. God knows uni in Edinburgh was a wild time.
MARY
(laughs)
You don't need to tell me. I can one hundred percent remember the first time we met. Although I'm pretty sure you don't remember a damn thing.
CHARLIE
Please. Enlighten me.
MARY
Well let's see. I remember going out in Cowgate one night, during the beginning of my masters, while Clint was watching Rose for me. As I'm walking past The Three Sisters, I

You have to ignore all that bull. They don't know Charlie White like I know Charlie White.
CHARLIE
Are you sure though?
MARY
What do you mean?
CHARLIE
The leaked texts and phone calls between me and Scarlet. I can't deny the horrible things I called her. People wont forget that. To them I am this sexist pig. And when you start to hear and see all these lies made from the truth, you start to believe them yourself. And you know what, maybe I am pig.
MARY
I am not going to sit here and let you beat up on yourself. I’ve been married to Clint for 15 years now. Hell, the shit you called Scarlet, is not any worse than what Clint has said to me..in fact it may even be better...but that’s just how marriage works. When you love someone for so long and there are always going to be cracks in the edges, but it all depends on whether you're willing to fix it or let it get bigger.
CHARLIE
I really did want to make things better with her, it was just so hard. We built our own little empire together in a just a couple of years and she betrayed me by taking it all away.

I was laying in bed just thinking about our conversation today. Do I really want to marry Val? I rolled over and looked at my phone. It was 3am. I slid out of bed and grabbed my phone off the night stand. I was half way out the door when I heard Val say," babe where are you going?" "Restroom. Go back to sleep," I responded. I closed the door behind me and walked across the hall to the bathroom. I closed and locked the door. I called Lindsay, hoping that she would tell me what to do. She's always been the mom of the group. "Hello," she said in a groggy voice. "Hey Linds can we talk?" I asked. "No! What do you have to talk about that couldn't wait until the morning?" She said obviously aggravated. I forgot Lindsay is not a morning person. "But…

Charlie Wales tries to change his life but he is paying for what he has done in the past. He lost her daughter’s custody because his previous life and now he tries to win it back. The story of Charlie Wales is also a story of Fitzgerald and people who live in that time period. They are paying for their wasteful lives and irresponsible behavior. In the end, Wales says that “He wasn’t young any more, with a lot of nice thoughts and dreams to have by himself” (Fitzgerald 689). He has all these nice thoughts and imaginations of him living with her daughter happily, but all of these are not going to come true and he will live with these alone. His mistakes cannot be fixed and he is still paying for it. His failure of getting her daughter back is determined at the beginning of the story where he leaves Tom’s address for Duncan at the Ritz bar. When he almost gets his daughter back, his friends he used to get drunk with come to the guardian’s house and it reminds the guardians how he used to be (Fitzgerald 687). It is obvious that Charlie loves Honoria and that is the reason why he continually refuses the second drinks (Bryer 194). However, Bryer states that “His reluctance to accept his share of the blame for the destructive period in his past that placed Honoria in the custody of the Peterses, himself in a sanitarium and his wife, Helen, in an early grave, undercuts his…
