Mary Pleasant, also widely referred to as “Mammy Pleasant”, is the considered Mother of Civil Rights in California due to her work with the Civil Rights movement during the 1860s. She was an icon during the Gold Rush and Gilded Age San Francisco because of her political power, mainly due to her large fortune and as well as her influence, in the cause and in her fellow citizens. Her achievements as an abolitionist went unmatched until the late 1960s, during which other laws regarding slavery were passed; although her achievements were surpassed, it was her work that helped set off the chain reaction of events that led to the greater triumphs of the Civil Rights movement. Following the Civil War, Pleasant brought her battles to the courts in the 1860s, and claimed a handful of human rights victories. One of those victories, Pleasant vs. North Beach & Mission Railroad Company, was heavily cited and advocated in the 1980s, which is the main reason behind why Pleasant is known today as “The Mother of Human Rights in California”. The program was designed primarily to help women on welfare acquire job skills but, is also open to working women under a certain annual income and Jonetta qualifies and wants to pursue the program. However, Jonetta also wants to continue with her previous employment and explore opportunities with the state government computer training classes altogether but, appears to have conflicts with her employment shifts hours and the hours with the computer training classes that start in two weeks. My current household consists of my girlfriend Carolyn, two dogs (13 year old Pug Ferris and 10 year old Corgi Freddy), a kitten (6 month old Laney) and myself. The animals are for the most part a joy to experience, but the corgi has been exhibiting aggressive behavioral problems that have caused a great deal of concern, additional training, and medication. Carolyn and I enjoy spending time together and continuing to grow as partners, playing with our animals, traveling, and visiting with family both nearby and further away. We live in an open and spacious two bedroom apartment in a multi-unit complex that has a variety of recreational activities available on the grounds. There are a variety of ethnicities, age ranges and family structures represented in the complex. The apartment is within walking distance of a variety of retail and commercial offerings. This case presents a very typical situation that people encounter while working in the corporate environment. What is ethical, what is morally correct and what is just right out against the law are the questions that we all face while working in a corporate environment. Some of the ethical questions are governed by the law facing the situation. For example while working in an investment bank you most probably have access to inside information about upcoming deals that one could possibly use for personal monetary gain or you could act as a tippie and possibly share that confidential information with others. This kind of a situation is definilety governed by the law and you can actually be charged with various insider trading laws and possibly do some jail time as well. The other situation that is presented in the case is purely about ones ethical and moral standards. The analyst either has to compromise her loyalty towards her company B&B or towards her best friend Lori. While the situation presented is not a real zero-sum game, i.e., one player’s loss does not equal to the gain of the other player. When faced in a situation like this one has to think about what decisions can be made that will have the least affect on the players involved. The analyst should not look at the situation she faces as black or white. She should rather think about other options she might have to retain her friend’s loyalty while not compromising her loyalty towards her current employer.
