“Excerpt from Damned Lies and Statistics: Untangling Numbers from Media, Politicians, and Activists” by Joel Best described how numbers and statistics can be used to skew the view and opinion of the public. Using numbers that aren’t always actually false, statistical analysis can be used to support either sides of an argument. I found it interesting how you can find two numbers that have wildly different outcomes even when the numbers are technically correct. On top of this American as a whole is a large, sometimes ignorant, consumer of knowledge; believing any number they see on a news outlet or from a reputable source.…

By the 1950’s, she had won many legal victories, but she was far from context. After 40 years of fighting for women to control their fertility, Sanger was extremely frustrated with the limited birth control options available to women. There had been no new advances since the 1842 invention of the diaphragm in Europe and the introduction of the first full length rubber condom in the US in 1869. She had championed the diaphragm, but after promoting it for decades, it was the least popular method in the United States. It was highly effective, but expensive, awkward, and most women were embarrassed to use it. Even in her seventies, this didn’t stop Margaret from creating something better. She had been dreaming of a “magic pill” since 1912, but…

Mary Stuart was born in 1542; 50 years after Columbus found America. She was born, of course, in Scotland. Sadly, Mary's life was brought to an end on February 8, 1586 at the age of forty-four because of her religious beliefs as a Catholic. Her death bill was actually signed by her own cousin, Elizabeth I of England, who at first was against it but was soon convinced by her own benefits of her cousin's death, such as gaining the Scottish throne, that it must be done. Mary Stuart never had the chance to meet her father, James V of Scotland, but James V had caught wind of the birth of his daughter just before his own death. She still had her mother, Mary of Guise, though.…

Smartphone applications can be applied to almost anything, including topics such as health, education, careers, social media, and communication. Almost every day, my teachers encourage me to use my smartphone to play games to familiarize myself with information and use the different apps to study for upcoming exams. Both my robotics team and AP Physics class use different smartphone applications as a form of communication to help schedule group meetings, teach others different concepts they may not understand, and keep people up to date on different matters. Smartphones are an important aspect of the American culture, and an item that represents what people use every day to make their lives simpler. Along with showing the locals my technology, I would enjoy learning about what technology they use daily.…
