Mary Poppins Play Analysis
“This is a great show!” displays a sign outside of The New Amsterdam Theatre in Times Square; this is an understatement. For my Independent Theatre Talks Journal I saw the musical Mary Poppins on November 28, 2012 at 7 p.m. This musical, based off the Disney movie Mary Poppins, is directed by Richard Eyre and co-directed by Matthew Bourne; who also acted as co-choreographer with Stephen Mear. Mary Poppins is the story of the Banks family who live in a big house in London on Cherry Lane. The children, Jane and Michael, are in need of a new nanny and when young woman named Mary Poppins appears at their doorstep, the family finds that she is the answer to their prayers. Mary Poppins takes the children on several magical adventures, but the children

The production ‘Sweetown’ makes satiric humour of dark truths of Australians not acknowledging the horrific acts committed in Australian history towards the indigenous people of Australia, through the view of the townspeople consumed in a debate to build a monument acknowledging the massacre committed near their town. Being set in the mid-60s, emphasises the problems mentioned within the play through reflecting the current acknowledgment towards the issue and making comparisons to when discussion on the controversial topic had begun. The play switches between the perspectives of various townsfolk affected by the debate and shows the changes for better and worst which result from the debate, capturing the hopes and…

One study at UC Berkley showed that in a game of Monopoly, in which a random player receives a larger sum of money to begin the game in comparison to their opponents, that over time, this player will begin to feel entitled to the money he or she started with. This same idea of entitlement is prevalent in the play, Glengarry Glen Ross. The play demonstrates how a competitive, unfair work environment skews the perspective of the workers by making the people who lose feel mad at the system and the winners feel entitled to their earnings.…

“Peter and the Starcatcher” by Rick Elice is a prequel to the widely known story “Peter Pan”. This production employs a multitude of production elements that led to the success of the play and made the production even more interesting for the audience. The three production elements that I felt that “Peter and the Starcatcher” employed the best were lighting, costumes, and the overall set and props used.…

"Never affirm, always allude: allusions are made to test the spirit and probe the heart" (Umberto Eco). The Faerie Queene consistently alludes to the book of Revelation adding both richness and depth to the story. Revelation played a huge role in the development of this epic being that it was the main book that was referenced from the Bible. The allusions help set up the story, and also add references that most people of that time period can understand. The Bible was the most popular book in the late 16th Century, so to allude to anything else might go unnoticed. Spenser uses the Book of Revelation and the Bible in abundance to add…

Musical theater and entertainment have been an ever-changing enterprise that, until very recently, included little diversity. In March of 2008, a new musical was presented on Broadway. It was titled In the Heights. This new musical featured something never before seen in musical theater: the songs are primarily latino rap. It was a bold step down a path no one had taken before. The story takes places in a poor neighborhood in New York called Washington Heights. Those living there are immigrants from hispanic and latino countries, such as Puerto Rico and The Dominican Republic. This new musical was written by composer, rapper, and actor Lin Manuel Miranda. Miranda starred as the main character, Usnavi. He composed all of the music, rap, and lyrics for the show. At a performance in the White House for president…

"Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man' heart, and the fall through the air of his true, wise friend called Piggy" demonstrates the main theme of this novel: man is evil by nature. The three things that Ralph weeps for are the lessons he has on this island: innocent boys become savage; all human beings have evil deep inside their hearts and the fall of science and rationality before the evil of human. These three issues are developed throughout the whole novel with this passage as the conclusion of the main theme - human beings are evil by nature.…

People can understand the difference between what is right and what is wrong. In the legal system, a person's failure to act can result in a terrible situation where someone can die. William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily" shows how a whole town doesn't use the law to help in the situation, which was the result of the death of Homer Barron. The argument will be that there was an affirmative duty and the townspeople failed to respond.…
