Mary Warren Character Traits
“I can not hear you!” This was a quote said by Gov.Danforth while he was questioning Mary Warren in Court. Mary was so quiet she wouldn't say anything aloud and she keep her head down. Mary warren is a shy 17 year old girl in the “Crucible.” Mary is an official of the court. Mary Warren is also a servant at the Proctor's house and turns her back on John and blames him for being a witch. Mary Warren and I have a few personality traits in common in that we are caring to our friends, shy individuals and aggressive to a fault. First trait Mary Warren and I share is that we are caring, Mary displayed her caring side when she felt so bad for not being at the Proctor's house all day. So, Mary made a poppet for Elizabeth. She tried to prove that she was sorry and that she does care about her and wants to help her out. Being caring could also be one of my flaws. My caring side is a big help at times For example, when my best friend broke up with her boyfriend. I bought her some flowers and took her out to eat to cheer her up. Another time when I was caring was when a kid in my gym class was getting made fun …show more content…
Mary Warren is shy throughout the play. For one example, Mary is shy when she is walking into court with John Proctor. Mary avoids eye contact with anyone. She walks with her head down. When Gov. Danforth is asking her questions she won't look up, she talks very quiet. My shy side has big impact on my life. For one it had a big impact on my life for many reason. But one reason in english class my freshman year, I had to read a play out loud and I wouldn't do. If I didn't pretend I was losing 50 points. I refused to do. So the teacher talked me into and I did so I wouldn't fail 9th grade English. Another example, is that I’m so shy I don't order my own food. When i go out to eat I have someone else order my food.     Ordinarily, they were not permitted to do things that children of other cultures would do regularly. Of course, in reaction to their suppression, the community’s youth will be rebellious. When Parris states, “Why, sir- I discovered her, and my niece and ten or twelve of the other girls, dancing in the forest last night,” John Hale responds with a surprised and almost judgmental, “You permit dancing?” (36). As implied by Hale’s response, dancing was barred for people in this society. This shows the peculiarity that Miller is seeking to demonstrate for this civilization throughout The Crucible. Mary Warren often changes her story when testifying, from having seen the devil to having not ever. Being just a young girl, adults would try to shape her to their advantage, so Mary caused their plan to backfire by continuously changing the story and making her testimony invalid. Miller states that Parris is “smiling, but nervous because Danforth seems to be struck by Mary Warren’s story,” (100), because he feels that Danforth is being influenced by Mary in the way that he does not want in order to save himself.     Self-censorship is a common symptom of “groupthink” shown throughout Miller’s play. For instance, while John Proctor is frustrated about the accusations made against his wife, Elizabeth, Hale hesitates but must stand his ground and keep his opinions to himself. Miller writes, “Proctor:… There are them that will swear to anything before they’ll hang; have you never thought of that? Hale: I have. I—I have. It is his own suspicion, but he resists” (Miller 1303). Proctor seems to not understand that all accusations must be acted on and Hale must do his job as a Reverend, despite the outcome. Hale hides his suspicions by keeping his doubts to himself, therefore, exhibiting self-censorship. Supporting Miller’s example, Janis describes the symptom itself. “Groupthink” states, “avoid deviating from what appears to be group consensus; they keep silent about their misgivings… minimizes the importance of their doubts” (Janis). Unexpressed doubt avoids conflict to maintain the apparent majority rule. Clearly, Hale keeps silent, making his opinion a minority to the group’s decision.
