Mary’s virginity before the birth of Christ is supported by the Fathers of the Church, whom lived around the same time as the Apostles. Thus the Fathers of the Church have full faith on what is declared by Luke 1:26- 27, “The angel Gabriel was sent from God…to a virgin betrothed to a man…and the virgin’s name was Mary.” Through this passage, the Church believes that Mary was a virgin before giving birth to Jesus, and as well because the Fathers of the Church all agree. Since the Fathers “attest” and “affirm” Mary’s virginal conception, the Church has full faith that it is true. As with all other dogmas, it is known that popes take a stand on certain topics involving the Church. In this case, popes like Pope Paul IV have stated, “The same Blessed Virgin May is… truly the Mother of God and did… retain her virginity before the birth, in the birth and perpetually after the birth.” Further on, Pope St. Leo I said,” He (Jesus) was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mother, who gave Him birth losing her virginity just as she conceived Him without losing her virginity.” These popes are only two of many who state that Mary was a virgin before the birth of Christ.
