Mary's Perpetual Virginity
The Church has held Mary’s perpetual virginity as a dogma, and it is also true that it has brought about distrust and doubt. This skepticism towards Mary’s virginity has grown through out the history of man kind. At the very heart of this dogma lies the credence of the Church and of the Magisterium, who have the proficiency to maintain Mary’s perpetual virginity as an absolute truth. This upholding has perpetually led to the debate of whether Mary, Mother of Jesus, was in fact a virgin through out her entire life. Many see this affirmation as impossible, nonetheless the Church has always believed Mary remain a virgin “during childbirth and after childbirth.” Conversely many people do agree with this statement for the mere belief that the Bible …show more content…
Mary’s virginity before the birth of Christ is supported by the Fathers of the Church, whom lived around the same time as the Apostles. Thus the Fathers of the Church have full faith on what is declared by Luke 1:26- 27, “The angel Gabriel was sent from God…to a virgin betrothed to a man…and the virgin’s name was Mary.” Through this passage, the Church believes that Mary was a virgin before giving birth to Jesus, and as well because the Fathers of the Church all agree. Since the Fathers “attest” and “affirm” Mary’s virginal conception, the Church has full faith that it is true. Additionally, Mary asked the angel Gabriel, “How can this be, since I have no husband?” If Mary consumed her marriage to Joseph, than “her question would have been nonsensical;” therefore, her virginity is “simply beyond reasonable …show more content…
As with all other dogmas, it is known that popes take a stand on certain topics involving the Church. In this case, popes like Pope Paul IV have stated, “The same Blessed Virgin May is… truly the Mother of God and did… retain her virginity before the birth, in the birth and perpetually after the birth.” Further on, Pope St. Leo I said,” He (Jesus) was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mother, who gave Him birth losing her virginity just as she conceived Him without losing her virginity.” These popes are only two of many who state that Mary was a virgin before the birth of Christ. What the popes say are to be held definitely and infallible; therefore, they cannot be wrong when saying Mary was a through out her whole life. She was able to conceived Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit, which it is inevitably divine as it is related to

There are many instances in Mary’s narrative where she mentions the state of her spirit. In the section titled “The Third Remove”, she starts to wonder if she is cursed. She worries that God will not show her mercy and she is afraid that there are no more blessings left for her. By this time, she had been separated from her family (those who were still alive), she watched her youngest child die, and she was hungry and overworked. It’s hard to imagine how she could suffer these tragic events without her faith wavering. Even Mary, devout and determined to stay true to God, has moments of questioning. That’s not to say that she ever looses her faith completely; She struggles, yet she always finds her way back to God. In this instance, when she fears she is cursed, she turns to the next chapter in her bible, and learns that mercy is hers once again (Rowlandson 449).…

Why is Mary so important for just having a baby? There are many powerful women in the Bible. A powerful women is one who makes a difference and changes lives. The most powerful woman in the Bible is Mary. The Catechism states, “she be wholly borne by God’s grace” (“Catechism of the Catholic Church” 490). Learning about Mary allows people to understand Jesus more and shows how much courage and strength she has. Mary is so important that God sent other biblical women ahead of her to prepare the way. She also played a major role in our salvation. God specifically called on Mary because she was “full of grace” and because she was free from sin. Mary gave up everything to obey God and to follow his will which led to her being the most important woman in history. Because of this she saved humanity by following God's will ("Catechism of the Catholic…

In The Account of Mary Rowlandson Captivity Narrative, Mary Rowlandson describes in detail the tragic events she had to face after being taken captive by the Wampanoag’s in 1676. She is certain that the only reason she has been taken captive is because god is punishing her for her wrong doings. Like Mary Rowlandson Col. John Smith also was taken captive against his will. In Col. James Smith Captivity Narrative he is not treated poorly or beaten but adopted by the Native Americans. Both Mary Rowlandson and John Smith write about their time during captivity. While Mary Rowlandson’s focus is religion and how everyone should be more dependent on god, John Smiths main focus is the culture and ability of the native Americans to be so successful in there day to day life. While some may say Smith was successful in surviving because he was adopted and Rowlandson because of god, both Rowlandson and smiths survival were equally do to them being able to become acculturated with their surroundings.…

The story of Mary, her miraculous birth, childhood, and pregnancy, indicate an intent on the author’s part to establish an answer to the questions raised by readings of the stories in the Gospels. According to Matthew and Luke – either for entertainment or theological purposes. As mentioned previously, Ehrman (2016) argues that as time passed and more Christians became familiar with the stories surrounding Jesus, Christians grew curious about the seemingly less important characters that were brushed over and began to wonder why a woman such as Mary was chosen to bear the Son of God. The Proto-Gospel of James intention clearly is to answer this question while argue against Christians who propose a sexual, pro-household interpretation and mode…

The last century-and-a-half has seen numerous accounts of appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Jesus, Himself, is said to speak to a few of the seers. Some of the apparitions have received official approval by the Roman Catholic Church. Common threads running through all the messages are: Jesus has been offended by the multiplication of against His Sacred Heart; and Mary exhorts humanity to prayer and repentance and an increased devotion to the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Confession. A simple message, but the alternative, we are warned, is a great chastisement which will befall mankind.…

The book is a collection of miracles performed by, or relating to, the Virgin Mary. In the Christian tradition, the Virgin Mary holds a high place among the saints. She is said to have conceived the child Jesus as a virgin, and to be the only woman ever born without Original Sin. Throughout the history of Christianity she has been said to have appeared to people in numerous apparitions, and interceded for mankind through various miracles and signs. The first element of the Three-fold virginity of Mary entails her virginity after the conception of Jesus. The first clue, in accounting for her virginity, comes in the form of her discussion with an angel. The angel says, “And the holy child that will be born of you is the Son of the Most High. And you shall call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins." This passage shows that Mary was untouched by a man, but that she is to carry the Lord’s child. Another form of evidence of Mary’s virginity while pregnant with Jesus has, once again, to do with an angel. Joseph, having seen Mary’s impregnated stomach and believing her to no longer be a virgin, is approached by an angel whom explains that the child is of the Holy Spirit. Making all doubts of her virginity vanish from Joseph’s mind. Perhaps the most influential piece of evidence, supporting Mary’s virginity, is when Mary and Joseph are called to the priest. They both deny intimacy, claiming they are pure when it comes to one another, and in Mary’s case, pure all together. The priest chooses to investigate their claims and tests them, forcing both to consume the water of bitterness, which is a form of poison. When both Mary and Joseph return, the priest states, “If the Lord God has not made your sin manifest, neither do I condemn you." Allowing them to leave, with…
