Mas Selamat bin Kastari born on 23 January 1961, an Indonesian -born Singapore Citizen, was for more than a year Singapore's most-wanted criminal after escaping from Whitley Road Detention Centre on 27 February 2008. The search for Mas Selamat Bin Kastari has been labelled as the largest manhunt ever launched in Singapore the manhunt consisted of personal from the Singapore Armed Forces Commandos, The Singapore Police Force and Coast Guard and even the Ghurkha Regiment of Singapore aided in the search for the latter As they combed the jungle for days and possible escape routes used by the latter in his escape. Posters of Mas Selamat bin Kastari were handed out island wide making him the most popular person in Singapore at that Time of escape.He was eventually recaptured in Skudia Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on April 1, 2009.

At 4:05 pm on Wednesday, February 27, 2008, the JI leader escaped from the internal securities department Whitley Road Detention Centre where he was being detained indefinitely under the internal securities act . His family were visiting him at the time of the escape, and he was being led to a room to meet them when he asked the Ghurkha guard on duty to let him go to the gents. He then fled by climbing out of the window.
