Wilson starts writing to a pastor that he feels the two of them are friends and he also tells the pastor that he grew up in the same religion as him. Wilson also notes that they are both Americans, more specifically Southerners. Wilson the goes on to mention the key difference between them. The pastor takes the Christian Holy Scripture literally and rejects the conclusion of Science. While Wilson is an atheist who takes a scientific approach and believes that people evolved from Apes. Though they have different beliefs, both Wilson and the pastor like everyone else in the world strive for the same imperatives of security, freedom of speech, personal dignity, and a cause to believe in. Wilson then proposes that no matter their beliefs they both need to spend time to help the environment. Scientist predicts that by the end of this century half of the plants and animals will become extinct. Wilson needs the pastor’s help because Religion and Science are the two most powerful forces in today’s world. Wilson says that almost none of the Religions have worried about Nature. Some Religions believe in the book of Revelation that a second coming of Christ will be soon and therefore they don’t have to worry about the Nature because they will all be taken to heaven. Charles Darwin even started out as a minister who referred to the bible with everything. But early on his voyage to Brazil he said, “It is not possible to give an adequate idea of the higher feelings of wonder, admiration, and devotion which fill and elevate the mind.” Wilson is familiar and heartened by the Christians way of talking about Creation. Wilson then says that even though their belief on Creation is different they can come together because they share a common purpose to help protect and save the environment and Nature.…
Everybody has a past. Some may have a wonderful past full of fun events and great deeds, and some may have a terrible past that haunts them every day of their life. Either way, everybody has an eventful history that is full of good memories, bad memories, regrets, and rejoices which we cannot hide from no matter how hard we try. Paul McCartney had a dream one night about his past. This dream caused him to realize how un-thoughtfully he had lived his life in the past and how he had not paid attention to anybody’s feelings but himself. From this dream he wrote the hit record “Yesterday” by The Beatles in which he portrayed his feelings for a girl that he had mistreated. Paul McCartney will always remember how he mistreated the girl, just as the rest of us will remember certain events in our pasts. In the novel, All the Kings Men by Robert Penn Warren, we see how the past affects the lives of many people. Some people try to ignore their…
Gene Yang uses the symbolism of Transformer and Jin Perms to demonstrate the idea that Jin wants to be an American + change his hair as an American and to look like an American. Symbolism is a literary technique that authors employ by attributed to natural objects or facts. At the beginning of the book, Jin and Wei-Chen meet in the first time in school and talk about the toy robot: “<What is that?>” “<A toy robot.>” “<He can change into a robot monkey.>” “<My father gave it to me just before I left. As a good-bye present.>” (39). Jin and Wei-Chen were talking about the toy robot but they were talking in their own language and not in english. It connects to my point because Jin wants to be an American but he still talking in his own language. At the middle of the book, Jin was at his locker, Wei-Chen and Suzy was walking in the hallway when Suzy and Wei-Chen saw Jin hair and they was surprise. “…” “…” “…Jin?” “What?” “Why is your hair- MMPH” “Nothing nice perm!” “Thanks! See you guys at lunch” “Yeah! See ya!” “Be Nice! He’s your best friend!” “Why is his hair a broccoli?!”(98). Jin change his hair to look like an American and act like an American. It connects to my point because Jin wants to look like an American but also he wanted to look like Greg to have a chance with Amelia. The author Gene Yang uses the symbolism of Transformer and Jin Perms to demonstrate the idea that Jin wants to be an American + change his hair as an American and to look like an…
William Golding, in his novel lord of the flies, implies that without the constraints of social order, people would descend into anarchy and chaos. Three examples in the text that demonstrate this idea are the conch, the character of jack, and the deaths of piggy and Simon.…
Simon is a secondary character. He does not influence the story directly by his decision but is importent for the cohesion.…
The play Master Harold and the Boys is thrilling, entertaining and challenges many ideas, preconceptions and ones view of society. Master Harold and The Boys has a clear motif, and is choreographed incredibly well and strategically.…
The newly formulated theory of evolution crafted by Charles Darwin in the 19th century was both radical and revolutionary by today’s standards. Due to its obvious conflicts with Creationist views brought about by the Bible, the theory was not commonly adopted by people who worshipped the Bible’s teachings. The play Inherit the Wind, written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, models itself directly after the famous 1925 Tennessee v. Scopes trial in which Darwin’s theory of evolution and the Bible’s Creationism which were at odds. The defendant Bertram Cates and his defense attorney Henry Drummond face off against the prosecuting attorney Matthew Harrison Brady in a court of law. Throughout the entire trial, Drummond is seen as being perseverant,…
“Master Harold”..and the boys and A Raisin in the Sun, though written during different time periods, are both based off the same topic and struggles of racial prejudice and attitudes. The Younger family in A Raisin in the Sun and Willie and Sam of “Master Harold” and the boys are both subject to racial attitudes throughout both plays. The Youngers are targeted by the Clybourne Park Improvement Association, specifically Mr. Karl Lindner while Willie and Sam are targeted by 17 year old Hally. Both groups suffer through the hardships that come along with being a black person in their time period.…
One of England 's greatest scandals was the disappearance and murder of two princes in 1483. The children of King Edward IV, Edward V and Richard, Duke of York were allegedly "imprisoned" shortly after his death. King Edward 's brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, secretly wanted the throne for himself. He would 've gone to extremes to make sure it happened. Yet, there is still great debate over him actually murdering his nephews. The Princes in the Tower focuses on the life of the two princes, how Richard III took over, and the death of the two boys.…
In 1898 Edwin Austin Abbey painted a beautiful depiction of a scene in Shakespeare’s King Lear. The scene is of Cordelia leaving her sisters and all of court after her father, King Lear, divides his kingdom to her two elder sisters, Regan and Goneril, leaving her with nothing. This painting has been named many different names such as Cordelia’s Farewell, Scene from King Lear, and the most fitting, The Daughters of King Lear, so called in the Yale University organized collection of Abbey’s paintings. This painting is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where I first viewed it. Unfortunately it was being held in viewable storage of the American Wing, and not out on display due to renovations. The painting is huge, 54 ¼ by 127 ¼ inches, and impressive. It is a different version of an emotional scene of one of William Shakespeare’s greatest plays, as well as a perfect example of Edwin Austin Abbey’s work.…
A classic stands the test of time because it presents timeless, universal ideas and people from all times and places can relate to it. William Golding's classic Lord of the Flies stands the test of time because of the universal ideas explored such as good versus evil and the nature of the human conditions. Lord of the Flies can be studied by people over and over again because it will always provide a message no matter who they are or where they come from.…
