Matale is a city, in Matale District, Central Province, Sri Lanka, 142 kilometres (88 mi) from Colombo and 26 kilometres (16 mi) from Kandy. It is the administrative capital of Matale District. Surrounding the town are the Knuckles foothills called Wiltshire. It is a mainly agricultural area, where tea, rubber, vegetable and spice cultivation dominate. The Aluvihara Temple, on the North side of the town, is the historic location where the Pali Canon was first written down completely in text on ola (palm) leaves.
Matale was a site of a major battle in 1848 when the Matale Rebellion started and the British garrison in the Fort Macdowall in Matale was placed under siege by the rebels led by Weera Puran Appu & Gongalegoda Banda who are renowned national heroes in Sri Lanka.
This Historical city was also home to Monarawila Keppetipola, another national hero who led the Wellasa rebellion against the British troops. His ancestral home, the Kappetipola walawuwa is still present at Hulangamuwa, Matale.

Having an effective healthcare system has been a priority for every government in modern times. Everybody has a significant event, or emergency in their lives that at a minimum requires medical assistance, and sometimes hospitalization. The kind of medical care received can vary widely based on availability, and personal preference. Destitute hospitals are often the result of failed policies, or unstable governments, In the book “Little Princes”, Connor Grennan describes the hospital conditions in Kathmandu, Nepal during a civil war. While some clear similarities exist between the Hospitals in the Western Kentucky, U.S.A., and Kathmandu, Nepal, there are striking differences.…

The article Go figure : Math and the Common Core by Marilyn Burns described and gave examples of the problem solving strategies that students go through with common core standards. The article began with the author sitting at the dinner table with her grandchildren. Her grandson asked her how long ago she had written a particular book. She proceeded to ask him to tell her, and she then described the thinking process and strategies he used to come up with the answer.…

On February 28, 2010, I went on a fieldtrip to a Methodist church called Muir’s Chapel United Methodist Church (UMC). The church was founded in 1822 when Jeremiah Dodson, a local preacher from the west, held services under brush arbors and the shade of oak trees on the grounds. The church grounds were located behind where the current building is located at 314 Muir's Chapel Road Greensboro, NC 27410. After his services and charge began, the charge was organized and passed on to the Reverend Thacker Muir. Reverend Muir cut the first log for the first structure known as the “Log Meeting House.” In Reverend Muir’s honor the name was changed to Muir’s Chapel.…

The end of World War II marked an important time in American history – once again, America had proven its military and economic prowess. In the years following 1944, much change was instituted regarding both foreign and domestic affairs. 1949 was a turning point in American domestic and foreign policies to the extent that it supplemented and amplified developments that had already been put in place. Many of these developments were the results of the Cold War or World War II, however 1949 marks when these policies and political ideals were further developed.…

    First Time in Church

The content of the worship is very different from the way I am used to in Islamic mosques. The priests started by saying “We bless ourselves for prayer in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit” and the crowd responded with an Amen, and then a person started to read from the bible. Every time the priest or the person finished the reading, people said “The word of the Lord.” People kept repeating what the priest was saying until he started to read the Gospel. When he stared reading the Gospel, people crossed themselves on the forehead, the lips and the chest with their thumbs to show that Christ is on their mind. Then the priest started to bless the bread and wine, and every person got to drink and eat from them. Then the priest asked people to show a sign of peace by greeting people who are next to each other saying “Peace be with you.” At the end, the Priest blessed everyone and ended the Mass by telling people to go forth and spread the word, and the response was “Thanks be to God.”…

Havells India acquired Sylvania Lighting Inc. This acquisition was a good strategic acquisition for Havells India. This made sense because of the fact that Havells was looking to expand its market. Havells prior to the acquisition only had entrance into the Southern and Eastern markets. After the acquisition of Sylvania they will have acquired an international business division and certifications. This includes over 45 different countries including Europe, Middle East and Africa. With the acquisition Havells also receives another business firm which is the lighting business. The products include primary lighting and lighting fixtures. These products are fully developed and have a wide range since 2006. This acquisition would be manageable if both sides are willing to cooperate and work together.…

Christ the King Baptist Church, that’s the name of the church I recently attended, and although it was a lot different from my own catholic faith, I enjoyed it very much. There were a lot of people in this service; around 35 to 45 people were present. Everyone that was there was dressed semi-formal, casual clothes which were the same thing in the Catholic Church service.…

    Church Visit

I visited Bethlehem Baptist church in downtown Minneapolis; this was my first time inside a church. The church building was like a large hall with comfortable chairs set out in a carpeted area facing a raised platform with two levels. My tour guide was the deacon of the church (Byron). He explained that their Sunday worship services begin at 10.30 am and 6.30 pm and typically last just over an hour. As you enter, you should be welcomed by a steward and be given a copy of the weekly notice sheet. You can have a song book if you want one but most songs are projected onto the screen at the front of the church. If the steward realizes that this is your first visit to TBC, she (or he) should also give you a welcome leaflet called "What's on Offer”. You can sit anywhere (other than on the platform!). They don't have reserved seats and people do not have their "own seat". Sit down, try to relax and take in everything around you... he said we know visitors can feel worried about when to stand up or sit down so we try to explain what to do as we go through our services.…

On April 3, I visited the 9:00 AM mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Kirkland with my grandma who has been a practicing Catholic her entire life. The church had a very welcoming atmosphere. The church building is somewhat simple, without many of the top decorations. The architecture is simple, and resembles that of many other small churches. There is a steep area of the roof that is a common characteristic of a church's architecture. On the inside there were many rows of pews from the front near the altar to the back. On the altar there was an organ, a large cross, and a hanging, medium-sized stained glass.…

Shantiniketan (Bangla: Shantiniketôn) is a small town near Bolpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, India, approximately 180 kilometres north of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). It was made famous by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, whose vision became what is now a university town (Visva-Bharati University) that attracts thousands of visitors each year. Shantiniketan is also a tourist attraction because Rabindranath wrote many of his literary classics here, and his house is a place of historical importance. History Shantiniketan was previously called Bhubandanga (named after Bhuban Dakat, a local dacoit), and owned by the Tagore family. Rabindranath's father, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, found it very peaceful and renamed it Shantiniketan, which means abode (niketan) of peace (shanti). It was here that Rabindranath Tagore started Patha Bhavana, the school of his ideals, whose central premise was that learning in a natural environment would be more enjoyable and fruitful. After he received the Nobel Prize (1913), the school was expanded into a university in 1921, but in 1951, it became one of the central universities of India. Many world famous teachers have become associated with it. Indira Gandhi, Satyajit Ray, Abdul Ghani Khan and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen are among its more illustrious students. Kala Bhavana, the art college of Shantiniketan, is still considered one of the best art colleges in the world. Other institutions here include Vidya Bhavana; the Institute of Humanities, Shiksha Bhavana; the Institute of Science, Sangit Bhavana; Institute of Dance, Drama and Music, Vinaya Bhavana; Institute of Education, Rabindra Bhavana, Institute of Tagore Studies and Research, Palli-Samgathana Vibhaga; Institute of Rural Reconstruction, and Palli Shiksha Bhavana; Institute of Agricultural Sciences.…
