Representative and Senator John C. Calhoun, a Democrat who represented South Carolina’s 6th congressional district, was a good Congressman because he was a skilled orator and helped pass laws that promoted economic and national stability; however, his defense for slavery and support for the unconstitutional act of nullification proved to be dangerous to the Union. After being elected into the House of Representatives in 1810, he pushed for the war against Britain by drafting the war bill which Congress approved in June 1812. During his ardent efforts to assist in the war of 1812, Calhoun realized the need for stronger national defenses and began opposing troop reductions and started advocating for additional military service academies. He also promoted protective tariffs and…
In philosophy, a term known as metaphysics, referred to the writings of Aristotle nearly three centuries after his death. Metaphysics is the area of philosophy that attempts to understand the basic nature of all reality, whether it is seen or indistinguishable we try to relate to our existence. It seeks a description so basic that it applies to everything, whether divine or human. In short, metaphysics attempts to enlighten what anything must be like in order to be at all. To call one a metaphysician in this traditional, philosophical sense indicates nothing more than his or her interest in attempting to discover what underlies everything. Old materialists, who said that there is nothing but matter in motion, and current naturalists, who say that everything is made of lifeless, non-experiencing energy, are just as much to be classified as metaphysicians as are idealists, who maintain that there is nothing but ideas, or mind, or spirit (Metaphysics, par 2). The major schools of thought in relation with metaphysics are realism, idealism, materialism, determinism, and libertarianism.…
Don’t waste time trying to make him think that materialism is true! Make him think it is strong, or stark, or courageous. That’s the sort of thing he cares about. The trouble about argument is that it moves the whole struggle onto the Enemy’s ground. (pp. 1-2)…

Growing up we are told by our parents to reach the ultimate level of education and become doctors, lawyers, scientist, and other high paying jobs. However, a man by the name of Christopher Johnson Mccandless was different than the average person, he decided to go on an adventure, which ultimately led to his death. Chris Mccandless was an outgoing, antisocial individual who traveled to the wild in search of the meaning of life. Chris was trying to find the meaning of life by pursuing a life of adventure, escaping his poor relationship with his parents, and living without materialistic views of society.…
Everyday people purchase thousands of objects and live in large houses and live the ideal material life, with material things, and lives based on what they own. However there are several people all over the world that have no homes and base their belongings on what they can carry with them. Lars Eighner was found homeless and through this, discovered his own lessons of life by scavenging and developing the understanding the difference between those who live through their possessions and those who do not. Thoreau learned his way of life through his exploration of nature, and his examination of the material world, which is something that Eighner did as well. “On Dumpster Diving” by Eighner and “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For” by Thoreau, they discover life lessons, and they criticize the 'rat race millions' but not similarly, which can be explained because of the way they approach life.…

Many people find the Materialist view about the nature of physical object believable. This is mainly because if we can imagine that all human minds commence as an empty cup and does not contain any ideas or memory of physical objects when we are born, as such we have no knowledge at this time. If we have knowledge of physical objects that does not come from experience, then most likely we have to be aware of it. A newborn cannot know what is a I Phone and will only acquire that knowledge as we go through life experiences. Any ordinary humans like myself and most people will never question the existence of a physical object if we can see, touch or taste it and would not one moment think that it only exists in the mine as an idea. On the other hand we do retain these ideas and once experienced an object physically then we will never forget it even if they are not present to our senses. We can never forget what an I Phone looks like even if it is not there for us to see or touch once we experience if before. Therefore from experiments and observations one can conclude that ice will always be cold, steel heavy and hard and this is what these particular physical objects will always look like to normal people.…
