Bowlby’s theory is based on a research study of 44 young people thieves and 44 young people who were emotionally disturbed, the aim of this research was to test maternal deprivation related to delinquency in young people. (Malim, et al.1998, p. 448). Most of the juveniles were looking after foster homes and hospitals before the age of 2, due to this, if a child doesn’t develop an attachment in his first years of being born, he may lose sensitivity and care for others (affectionless …show more content…
As a result, Rutter proved that difficulties in their families led them to behave incorrectly rather than maternal separation. However, Rutter does believe that a distortion of care at early years may cause negative psychological effects (Malim et al., 1998, p. 447)
Bowlby argues that it is a crucial period where children develop a particular attachment with their mothers and if it is not developed between that period, it will not develop any attachment, however a research study done by Tizard proved that foster children who were adopted at the age of 4 could develop an attachment with their adoptive parents; however, they did have problems afterwards. This supports Bowlby’s view, as he believes that if an attachment is disrupted the child may have social and intellectual problems. (Malim et al., 1998, p. 448)
There are many researches that study maternal deprivation; such as, the study of Lorenz who proved that an attachment is innate and preprogramed, moreover he demonstrated that an infant is emotional, social and psychological disturbed due to maternal deprivation. Nevertheless, Rutter concludes that problems usually come after the separation and not because of the
