Malnutrition is defined as “a deficit, excess, or imbalance of the essential components of a balanced diet” (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, Burcher, Camera, 2011, p. 923) and can refer to alterations in macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) or micronutrients (electrolytes, mineral, and vitamins). According to Dr. Robert Black et al. (2008, p. 243), “Undernutrtion encompasses stunting, wasting, and deficiencies of essential vitamins and minerals as one form of the condition known as malnutrition”. Undernutrtion describes a state of “poor nourishment as a result of inadequate diet or diseases that interfere…
Hi Mery, you are right malnutrition and obesity is a globe issue especially within our society. Personal as a mother nutrition is always in my mind trying to prevent my kids from being vitamin deficient. There is craze about vitamin right now, however my concern is about giving them vitamins they do not need. I to think we can get proper nutrients from fruits and vegetables sad I know that’s not always the case. I hope more research can be done on zinc to help fight this issue.…
In toddlerhood through adolescence, having the proper nutrients plays a huge role in immunity, growth patterns, and brain development. Because toddlers are very vulnerable to health threats and are in need of this, it may harshly affect the overall development within this age group and during the teenage years. This example, impacts development because without this necessity it cannot occur correctly, if at all.…

However an infant’s growth is predominantly determined by the nutrients that they receive. If an infant is brought up on the poverty line, or in a neglectful household they are unlikely to receive the nutrients that they need to grow to their full potential.…
The group of people most affected by poverty is children. “Children could potentially suffer from chronic malnutrition if they live in poverty for a long period of time (Payne 88).” “If chronic malnutrition occurs in infancy or early childhood the child’s immune system could be damaged and the child has a risk of suffering from a learning disability (Walls 221).” Some major consequences of chronic malnutrition effect the development of the central nervous system, cause permanent brain damage and even mental retardation. “Children living in poverty are also two times as likely to suffer from a physical or mental disability compared to the children not living in poverty (Payne…
Acute malnutrition is the more immediate killer: it afflicts an estimated 55 million children worldwide—19 million of whom suffer its deadliest, severest form—and results in some 3.5 million child deaths each year. This loss of life is all the more tragic because acute malnutrition is predictable, preventable, and treatable.…
Have you ever wondered what "OBGYN" stood for? It's an anagram for an interesting job, actually. The OB stands for Obstetricians and GYN stands for Gynecologists. An OBGYN is a doctor who specially treat pregnant women, their babies and help women with their 'lady parts'. They usually treat disorders, pain, infertility, infections and sometimes cancer. They also sometimes deal with scary subjects like menopause, miscarriages and sexual transmitted diseases. Becoming an Obstetrician and Gynecologist requires working with worried women, owning their own clinic and going to expensive medical school (Obstetrician).…
The section that really interested me was the Prescription and Nonprescription Drugs. Being pregnant, I have the decision if whether or not I want to do natural birth or prepared birth. I have been reading the good and bad about doing it. Something as simple as that and people nowadays have no problem drinking, smoking, and taking hard drugs while pregnant. Knowing that there is a precious life relying on you and your body why would you not take care of yourself. Now I am not dissing on people that have done that in the past but it is just people should really think. My mom drank and smoked when I was in the womb and I was diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome when I was younger. It has been a struggle to overcome all the obstacles.…
Children who live in poverty face many mental and physical health problems: “higher mortality rate due to infections, dental caries, chronic ear infections, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and poor school performance” (Shah, Kahan, & Krauser, 1987, p.485). One of the reasons for these problems appears to be the basic necessities of a human being which is adequate nutritious food. In a 2001 article, Alaimo studied the impact of food insufficiency and health problems among US preschool and school aged children. “One study, the Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project, conducted from 1992 through 1994, showed that poor hungry children…
In this paper, the focus is on female’s body image, specifically adolescents, and the factors that affect body image negatively. Studies in both The United States and Japan point to different factors that affect body image. The journal article “Relationship between body image and lifestyle factors in Japanese adolescent girls,” is used to compare and contrast with girls body image in The United States. So what is body image?…
In the political arena the importance of organization, rallies, and lobbying are essential. The poor and disadvantaged are not always represented in the same fashions as others are. The poor cannot always find the transportation to visit their representative’s offices to voice their concerns, and most often do not vote as often as the non-poor population. The subject of the poor, and help for the poor are not always at the top of the list for county meetings, or representative meetings.…
Getting the right amount of nutrients from the five food groups, fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, milk and dairy, fats and sugars and protein, are necessary to keep them from malnutrition. Malnutrition can happen when someone’s diet does not contain the right amount of nutrients and can either cause undernutrition which may lead to famine, bulimia or anorexia nervosa and can restrict someone from growth and from recovering from a disease or it can lead to the opposite, overnutrition, which may follow to obesity or being overweight which can then lead to chronic heart diseases and diabetes. Both, undernutrition and overnutrition, are very life threatening conditions and should always try to be prevented.…
