Topic 5: Understanding Groups and Teams
Textbook question: answer Question 2 in the ‘Case Application’ on page 393.
Team building excercises may make a team more effective as it builds team chemistry allowing members to be learn about themselves and how they interact with others. Through the use of fun activities the staff are encouraged to use teamwork and leadership when doing these tasks. Some activities, exhibit a lot of trust in other members of the team which helps in the icebreakers as well as improving communication in the team. By learning the importance of teamwork they realise through experience that they need each others help and input in order to accomplish these tasks which relate to the workplace. Likewise, in the workplace they need to be able to work with each other comfortably which includes factors such as listening to each other and accepting the support of others in response to difficult tasks ahead. The games and activities can also be used to remove cultural barriers as well as exploring and improving group dynamics by understanding the different types of personalities which exists in the team. This makes the team more effective as they are more able to relate with each other and can understand each others mannerism and way of communicating more efficiently. |
